Are the Santa Anna winds seasonal? How long do they last? Pardon my dumbness.

La Mesa is ~18 miles southwest of Ramona which is the site of the Crest Fire. Vista is west and slightly north of this fire, probably about same distance. (Best I can figure from my road atlas)

when does ramadan start? today?

Yes. Technically it starts when an Imam in Saudi Arabia sees the crescent new moon. (I guess if it's mushroom cloudy the month is extended...)

Yes, typically they are seasonal. Ordinarily, the winds here blow from the ocean. These winds blow from east to west from the California deserts. They are hot, dry winds.

These offshore winds create fires and crisp, beautiful waves. ;-)

Santa Ana winds are most common late summer and fall. They are forecast days in advance, plenty of time for ELF to coordinate arson plans, and unbolt power towers.

ordinarily, winds move off the Pacific Ocean onto the CA coast, west to east. In Santa Ana conditions, the winds are reversed and high pressure rolls over low pressure from northeast to southwest. The desert warms the air before it heads westbound. There are mtn ranges between the desert and the coast, so the winds pick up speed through the canyons and passes on their way down. That's how I understand it.
