Largest Solar Flare In 14 Years - Directed Towards Earth
Spaceweather ^ | October 28, 2003

Posted on 10/28/2003 8:33:41 AM PST by I_love_weather

SEVERE SOLAR ACTIVITY: One of the most powerful solar flares in years, a remarkable X17-category explosion, erupted from sunspot 486 this morning at approximately 1110 UT. A strong solar radiation storm is in progress.

The explosion hurled a coronal mass ejection almost directly toward Earth, which could trigger bright auroras when it arrives perhaps as early as tonight.

This gets more and more eerie, with the dramatic increase of upheaval in the world (even with all the upheaval that went before).

Largest Solar Flare In 14 Years

So a bigger one happened in 1989. I don't remember that one. I doubt that I will remember this one either.

You wouldn't happen to know whether or not this will affect my husband's defibrillator do you? I worry about that.

"This can damage utility-owned electrical equipment and cause widespread power blackouts like those that occurred in the 1980s in the Unites States and Canada. In March 1989, for example, 6 million people were left in the dark by a blackout in the Hydro Quebec system. What would happen if a slightly more severe event than the March 1989 storm caused a widespread blackout in the Northeast? U.S. officials estimate the potential economic damage at $3 billion to $6 billion."

I found this reference to the '89 flare via Google from something called "The Locomotive Engineer".

I don't think it will. I think it will affect radio frequencies like cell phones, etc.

It will be the Worlds largest incoming ZOT ever.

I'm glad this will be at night. Is this due to the Chinese plan to put a man on the sun? He is going at night as well.

If Bush hadn't opposed the Kyoto Treaty, this wouldn't be happening.

I live about 100 miles south of the arctic circle. The aurora is visible practically every night. Usually 3-4 bands east to west over entire night sky.

Everytime I hear about flare activity; it never seems to translate into thse red skys like that Oct evening about 4-5 years ago.

It will also mean warmer weather. It heats up the atmosphere. Lower heating bills, hoorah.
