Diplomatic bag is used to bring in heroin

A row between Britain and Sierra Leone was threatened yesterday after Gatwick customs officials discovered heroin worth thousands of pounds spilling out of what appeared to be a diplomatic bag en route to the West African nation's high commission in London.

They found the heroin after the bag, which had arrived at Gatwick from Freetown, burst open, scattering video tapes packed with the heroin.

Four Sierra Leonean government officials have been arrested in Freetown and are being questioned in connection with an alleged smuggling ring.

There are suggestions that a Nigerian drug cartel ring is behind the incident.

London has demanded a full explanation of such an apparent abuse of diplomatic protocol by President Ahmed Tejan Kabbah's government in Sierra Leone.

"Initially it would appear to have been part of the diplomatic bag from Freetown to London, but further investigation is needed to clarify this point," a Foreign Office spokesman said in London.

"If it is confirmed as part of the diplomatic bag, I would have thought a protest would be made to the Sierra Leonean High Commission."

Corruption is blamed for plunging the country into economic decline and civil war since independence from Britain in 1961.

I knew about the Nigerian 4-19 scams, but not only didn't I expect the participants to be paid at all, I certainly didn't expect them to be paid in pure heroin! From government officials, whose recently deceased uncles were the Comptroller General of the treasury.
