Haven't been there since way before 9/11, but it used to be that the only metal detectors were at the outside entrances...meaning you could get between all three House office buildings, the Capitol and the Senate office buildings without going thru a checkpoint again.

BTW: The Cannon is the closest building to a Metro station (Capitol South)...
