I assume you are aware that James Fenimore Cooper was also an essayist of note.

Reading Russell Kirk’s assessment of his works in that field led me to pick up his best known political and cultural work The American Democrat written about the rise of plain American conservatism and its compatibility with Jacksonian principles.

Give it a try.

Hey, thanks for the flag, Shaz.

I think Russell Crowe is a great actor but the movie doesn't really do much for me. Not a big fan of these swashy-buckly type things...

You seen Kill Bill yet?

I'm no groupie about Russell Crowe but the casting was perfect. I agree about Depardieu except he barely speaks English. Can't have that. I know that they will "modernize" the language to reach the unwashed masses but that is a shame. I could thoroughly enjoy the movie if most of the "action" took place in the cabin with the Captain and the doctor playing music and talking.

I don't worry too much about the technical bits. I have a friend who never got past Master and Commander because she kept flipping to the front and trying to visualize the changing of the sails each time they tacked. It's the language for all love. I want to talk like they do with the blessing.

If you love the language in the series, I highly recommend the recorded books audio version narrated by Patrick Tull. I'd read the whole series, but listening to Tull's performance took the experience to another level. If you love the books, take a listen. Our local library had them, otherwise they can be expensive to rent. But Tull gives one of the most extraordinary readings you will ever hear.

Thanks for the recommendation!! It so happens I was considering buying the audio books for my FIL whose eyesight is poor. He is a Korean War vet (Marine) and am hoping he will enjoy the books. I think *I* could benefit from an audio book too, as sometimes my eyes just glide right over the technical jargon. Your recommendation will help me out immensely!

Second that! The audio version is great. I actually look forward to driving around town now so I can hear another installment. I haven't had so much fun since my mother read the Hornblower books aloud to me (lo, these many years ago).

For those who HAVE read the books, even just the first five or so, what scenes made you laugh out loud?

The very first scene in Master and Commander.

"Sir, if you MUST beat the measure..."
