Well, it is probably a virus. But opening a .zip file will not excecute anything. So you can atleast double click on the attachement to see what is inside. However, be very careful at this point to not double click on any executables. In fact, don't click on anything that is not a document like extension. Such as .txt, .doc. .rtf, or .pdf. There are many others but you are probably better off just to DELETE the whole damn thing

Bad advice. Never open an email or even put in the preview window anything that you don't know what it is -- especially if you are using Outlook. There are too many exploits that operate without user intervention. There are also several exploits that target zip clients. Open a .zip, overflow a buffer in the client, and you're infected. You're right, probably in this case he can get away with it since it is a known virus, but it may be something else next time.
