What do you think of us actually putting our money where our mouth is and kicking up some cash for LTC West? Can somebody use a ping list to promote this idea and see where it goes?

"A REMF's Prayer" ;)
Now I lay me down to sleep With prayers that chuck won't leap Over the wire or under creep And from incoming, not a peep
Just one long unbroken night With no waking with a fright With no fearful imagined sight Just one night would be all right
But as I lay there and did this dream Came the inbound with a scream Nights like this can make you mean No rest from war it would seem
You grab your jacket, boots, and pot M-16 and all the rest you got "Damn this shit" is a passing thought As you wish that chuck would rot
Out the hootch and down the bunker For an hour you just hunker To say you're mad couldn't be blunter Another night has been blown asunder
Eventually, the all clear sounds The relief from all abounds Perhaps tonight no more incoming rounds Such nights form justifiable grounds
For a deep-seated hatred of war Not for the cause for which I was sure But for the fear and death and more War does not conform to the stuff of lore
War is dirty, it's hard and it hurts It kills with out mercy both shirts and skirts This wasn't what I expected, the private blurts I'm sorry my son, but that's the way war works

Yes.
I was and 11B during the Gulf War.
I was in Afghanistan 1 year ago, again yes.
I was in Iraq 3 mos ago, agian yes.
I have experienced incoming artillery, mortars, and missiles, and direct fire from enemy forces.
There are many others who have experienced far more than me.
Why do you ask? Are my points not valid unless I have been under fire? Certainly my experience in combat wouldn't make my "wrong" thinking "right" would it?

Colonel West should be nominated for the Congressional Medal of Honor, not persecuted by the effeminant boobs running this war.

Thanks for your reply and for the information you provided here. One last question. What would be your defense if you were he and went to trial?

If there are many more in our military like you, we don't have a prayer!
Rules are table decorations; war is total; either victory is the goal or surrender is imperative to avoid inevitable, and unnecessary casualties. You sound like a school teacher.

Generally when a soldier carries a rifle and has to shoot back at the enemy in order to defend their position, he has walked amongst the corpses of friend and enemy soldiers, has helped load wounded buddies onto the MEDEVAC choppers they have a much "closer" view of how, why and when it is permissible to "scare the living sh*t" out of an enemy soldier in order to obtain critical information.
Your general attitude about Col. West is one of a guy who sat in a covered foxhole while mortars thundered down around you, never seeing the enemy soldier face to face and considered himself in combat.
There is a large difference between that and the guy who has to shoot back just to keep his position from being overrun by the enemy soldier.
Which of the two have you done, both?

"Considering terrorists are blowing up our guys and gals like they are.. we NEED more Lt. Col Wests out there willing to get information out of these people." Right on!
Ispy4u is a textbook example of why we are having the difficulties we are in Iraq. - He is obviously the product/victim of our failed government school system, and I fear that there are more of him out there than there are Col. Wests.

Thanks for the ping. In the fwiw department, I would glady share a foxhole with Lt Colonel West. And, I don't like foxholes.

Thank you for your service and fighting the good fight on this thread.
Frankly, I just hope LTC West is allowed to retire with his pension. He has been "overcharged" as they say in the law biz. Prison and denial of pension should never have been on the table.

Did you see this thread? Thought you might be interested. Rules, smules!! I still wonder how, in relation to this situation, and when the Rules of Engagement changed, if they did change re this situation.
I'm very supportive of West and hope a way is found to exonerate him, but I do understand that the rules are important, especially in the military. (FTR, I'd follow West into battle any day!)
A hell of a situation, eh?

I think he was flustered and enraged with the fact that he was personally targeted, and lost his bearing. <<< "Lost his bearings"? Fella, we are at war, not in a finishing school for diplomats.....in war you kill or get killed. West did the right....no, the only thing a responsible commander should do under similar circumstances.
You bone up on the Marquis of Queensbury Rules.... and stand aside. Real men are fighting a real war.

You're the one who said that protecting the lives of the people under your command wasn't part of your job description, so I didn't take anything out of context.
Maybe it's just an Army thing. I wouldn't know. I was in the Corps where it was drummed into us that protecting the lives of those under our command was indeed our responsibility.
Of course accomplishing the mission came first, but you bet your sweet ass that the Marine Corps sure as hell didn't promote people who wasted the lives of those they were in charge of.
If any Noncom in the Corps uttered the drivel you wrote, he would have instantly been relieved of duty.
Noncoms with attitudes like yours lead to fragging. Normally I'm against it, but in your case.....
