ONRC Alert #162 - October 31, 2003.

Thursday, October 29, the US Senate, led by Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR), joined the House of Representatives in passing risky legislation that will do little to prevent future wildfires and makes a bad forest health situation considerably worse.

Rather than fully funding removal of flammable brush on lands adjacent to at-risk communities, such as those currently burning in southern California, the deal allows $380 million a year to be spent logging remote old-growth forests, miles from homes and property.

At the same time, the deal cuts the heart out of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) by gutting requirements that the government consider the environmental consequences of its proposals, and that federal agencies develop a range of alternatives to meet the projects' stated goals. Both of these bedrock elements of the environmental "Magna Carta" are rendered meaningless by the Bush/Wyden deal.

The lopsided nature of the vote (80-14) dramatically illustrates the consequences of one-party control of government. Backers of the logging corporations now control the White House, Senate and House of Representatives. Combine that power with the inflammatory imagery of the tragic southern California fires and the result is the political equivalent of a perfect storm.

It takes extraordinarily courageous leaders to oppose that kind of political storm and the 14 senators who opposed the deal deserve accolades for their principled stand. In particular, everyone who cares about our national forests and at-risk rural communities owes Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) a big thank-you for her courageous vote against the bill. She was the only western senator to do so and will likely face severe backlash from the well-funded timber industry.

Now, the bill (HR1904) moves back to the GOP dominated House, where representatives will either accept the dangerously flawed Senate bill, or stubbornly insist upon the even more drastic language that passed the House in May.

What you can do:

Call Senator Wyden and urge him to back away from the deal when the House returns the bill to the Senate.

Phone: (202) 224-5244 or (503) 326-7525 Fax: (202) 228-2717 Email: Through website at http://wyden.senate.gov

I don't remember having 80 Republicans in the senate? Hmm... I feel tingly just thinking about it though...

One party domination. Whats that supposed to mean? Doesn't a majority mean just that, one party in control no matter what? So if the Democrats were in control, then it would still be a one party dominated senate (and house since that is what these morons want).

But even that simplistic definiation isn't entirely true given that the Senate is NOT controlled by one party even as it is. Democrats currently have 49 (48 maybe since Jumpin Jim Jeffords I believe, is still independent). Enough to filibuster any legislation to stop those "evil" Republicans which...they didn't in this case. Ahhhhhhhhhhh. Poor ecomanics losing control of their pet issue. Bahahahahaha.

I should also add the Presidency if that is their goal too.

Which got to read more carefully, they were refering to the whole government. Not just the legislature. :-/ Still, even then, Democrats are NOT powerless. Too bad they look stupid and weak now. HAHHAHAHAHA
