Former secretary of state Katherine Harris ponders U.S. Senate
The Sun-Sentinel ^ | November 7, 2003 | By Mark Silva

U.S. Rep Katherine Harris -- whose role as Florida's Secretary of State during the 2000 presidential election made her a hero to Republicans and a villain to Democrats -- said Thursday she is "seriously" considering running for Florida's open U.S. Senate seat next year.

A lightning rod for controversy, Harris' ruling helped end a recount during the closest election in Florida history and secured a 537-vote victory for George W. Bush. The international notoriety gained from the 36-day battle could instantly propel Harris to the role of Republican front-runner in the bid to replace retiring U.S. Sen. Bob Graham.

"I'm still testing our temperature," Harris said, calling it a tough choice for her and her family. "My husband and I will seriously consider this and give it some thought. Yes, we will. ... My whole family will."

With her name, political and family history in Florida and ability to raise money nationally, Harris could leapfrog any of the Republicans running or considering running for a seat that could help decide which party controls Congress. She would also provide a ready target for Democrats eager to avenge Al Gore's 2000 loss. "She would automatically become the Republican front-runner," said Dario Moreno, political scientist at Florida International University.

"In a general election, she'll be a polarizing figure," Moreno said. "Whether you love her or hate her, she became the symbol for the 2000 election debacle. ... In a way, I think the Democrats would almost love to run against her."

I spent the last 4 days caring for very young grandchildren so I am suffering the haze of fatigue that comes with the situation. I'll have to dig back and find out what it was that leaves this conclusion lingering in my brain!

she was a driving factor behind a minority home owner bill which basically gives takes our tax dollars and gives them to persons of color who are too inept to get a house themselves. Robbing the producers to give something for nothing to the lazy. Other than that I'm not sure.

Not all low-income people are minorities. In fact, homeownership is a good thing. I would much rather have my tax dollars going to help people in this way, than to fund their living in some welfare apartment complex where they deal drugs and steal from others in the neighborhood. What this bill offers is no different than what I got from the VA.

From her website: “Studies show that the average net worth of low-income persons, which is $900 when they rent, skyrockets to $70,000 when they own their own home. Moreover, statistics demonstrate that children of families who own their own home experience a 13 percent higher graduation rate together with a 7 percent accelerated rate of math achievement and reading recognition Additionally, such children complete almost one-half year more of education.

. . .

The American Dream Downpayment Act attacks the homeownership gap that exists across America by authorizing $400 million in grants to cover the downpayment and closing costs associated with purchasing a home, which housing advocates have identified as the largest impediment preventing low-income Americans from owning their own home."

We will need to start posting Mrs Harris pictures in these threads. Similar to Ann Coulter. I don't know how otherwise I would.

I agree with you Ducky.  Don't you think she would contrast well to Hillary in the Senate.

Great minds concur, Duckman!  Does anyone have that picture of the lovely Ms. Harris on a horse?  I looked all over for that last week and couldn't find it.

Uh, pardon me but the bill itself was catered towards minorities. If you are white or asian tough luck. Stolen taxpyer monies can only be used for helping those who have the "correct" skin color.

You like that piece of legislation? You pay for it. The rest of us will try to obtain our own version of the American dream the old fashioned way - by working hard and not leeching off other hardworking people.

I heard Jeb talk about the program. IIRC, the goal is to get as many people as possible investing and caring for their own home. Vs rental dwellings that no one cares about, nor takes care of, nor grows any equity.

Don't know the specifics of the program. Anyone?

Harris has never appeared RINO to me.

The alternative, unfortunately, isn't no funding. The alternative is welfare. Pay their rent or give them that money in a down payment and watch them become productive citzens. It's a simple choice KantianBurke.
