Citing fears of increased gun violence ...

Lots of municipalities and states have enacted CCW. Is there any evidence in even a single instance where increased gun violence was a consequence? Aren't we at a point where the proper response to such concerns is "put up or shut up?"

It is a strategic blunder, for those who favor the RKBA, to expect support from LEO's, either blue collar police or white collar district attorneys and Dept's of Justice. They've already got their guns. Why should you have one?

Bucher said he is most concerned that the proposed legislation would allow concealed weapons in vehicles, putting police officers at risk whenever they make a traffic stop.

If they feel that the job is too dangerous, then they should get into another line of work. I'm pretty sure that cops are told at the academy to assume that the driver of every car they pull over is armed. Taxpayers do not exist to make things "safe" for the police!

"Waukesha police Capt. Mike Babe said he would support that strategy. "We're opposed to putting any more guns on the streets," Babe said.

The guns aren't going to be placed on the street. The law would enable folks to bear arms as an effective defense againt criminal attack. Seems the good capt. has a problem grasping reality.

Rosch said he fears the proposed law would turn simple street fights into deadly violence.

"We're opening the door to problems," Big Bend Police Chief John Hefley

The "problem" of honest citizens have the ability to defend themselves and their loved ones? The "problem" of JBT cops not feeling quite as all-powerful anymore?

Bucher said he is most concerned that the proposed legislation would allow concealed weapons in vehicles, putting police officers at risk whenever they make a traffic stop.

He said he has testified before lawmakers against legalizing concealed weapons and still feels that way.

"If I'm sitting in a room with 10 people, and they don't have guns, I feel safer," he said. Of several Waukesha County law enforcement officials interviewed Thursday, none expressed support for concealed weapons.

Brookfield Assistant Police Chief Dean Collins said the bill approved in the Senate would prohibit police officers from checking whether a person has a concealed weapon permit before attempting to arrest that person.

"This lack of intelligence could place officers in serious jeopardy," Collins said.

Menomonee Falls Police Chief Jack Pitrof said, "Any time officers are faced with potential danger, I would be against it."

Transalation: Anything that makes it less convenient to search the peasantry, NEVERMIND we will already have made them jump through background check hoops that conclusively determines that are NOT CRIMINALS, is bad.

Alternative translation: Shaking down the public for fines and manufacturing probable cause to seize a vehicle will be less comfortable, so this is bad.

The deception in the headline is so obvious. It is intended to mislead by making readers think that the rank and file cops oppose the CCW law. Reading the article, I notice that only the political side of the law enforcement agency is represented.
Sheriffs are elected -- they are politicians. Chiefs of Police are either appointed by a political body, or hired by a political body, usually a city council or county board of supervisors. Consequently, their opinions are nothing more than panderings to the liberals.
If this newspaper had any credibility, it would interview real cops and organizations that support or represent real cops. Then the real news could be reported -- that an overwhelming majority of cops on the street support CCW laws. Contact the Law Enforcement Alliance of America (LEAA) or Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) and see what their research shows.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR IN NAPERVILLE

MYTHS cloud self-defense

Ms. Sharon Heath article of 11.5.2003 listed many myths and I checked out her statistics and they did not square with FBI, DOJ reporting supporting her belief in “Lie with statistics”. The article sounded more like the following sound bits.

The availability of guns causes crime. Citizens are too incompetent to use guns for protection. Gun Control reduces crime. Gun buyback programs get guns off the streets. Only government and police should have guns. Guns are not a good deterrent to crime. Guns are often used to commit violent crimes. Private ownership of guns is not effective in preventing crime. Guns are not effective in preventing crime against women. You are more likely to be injured or killed using a gun for self-defense. Concealed carry laws increase crimes. Police are against concealed carrying by citizens. Countries with strict gun control have lower crime rates. Britain and Japan has strict gun control and low crime rate. The police are our protection, and people don’t need guns.

MYTH, Every statement above is a myth, a false statement as reported by the DOJ, FBI, and other learned scholars around the world all disagreeing with Ms Heath. The reference to England is a half-truth and is incorrect. Both (1st) Australia (4.1%) and (2nd) England (3.6%) have virtually banned gun ownership, yet have the highest rates of robbery, sexual assault, murder, and assault with force, topping the list of 17 industrialized nations with the United States (12th) at (1.9%). I am not a woman but would suggest that sexual assault is an extreme assault with force.

Washington DC, New York and Chicago have banned honest citizens from owning firearms. Chicago has the highest murder rate in the nation. The issue is not murder, the issue is the citizens ability to exercise bible given self-defense rights with tools equal to the assailant. 24,000 firearm laws have not solved the criminal propensity to commit crime. The Second Amendment is not about duck hunting.

Ms. Heath, the real issue is you belief that citizen should be disarmed when facing 4 million new felons on probation, (repeat offenders). Prisons do not rehabilitate only incarcerates for a period of time and release back into our neighborhoods. Naperville residents currently live in a bubble of safety. Millions of Illinois citizens would like that same right to self-defense as 45 other states allow, why not IL?

For the debate, the number of handguns (FBI) in the USA has increased from 151 million in 1972 to 322 million in 1994, with no change in the homicide rate of from 1972 to 1994 or (4.0) per 100,000 population. For the record, 93.2% of 22,587 Chief of Police and Sheriffs in the USA say that law-abiding citizens should be able to purchase a firearm for sport or self-defense. 68.2% of this same group stated concealed handgun permits would reduce rates of violent crime. I think that readers trust the FBI and 22,587 Chief of Police law enforcement leaders, than a officer of the court in the Chicago States Attorney office known for its Chicago gun grabbing policy?

Dont bother checking the stats of EVERY other state that has decided not to interfear in the God given right to self and family protection aka concealed carry

Violent crime rates go down...when decent people carry guns...criminals are fearfull when their potential victims carry handguns...

And I kinda figured the cops ought to think that criminals too scared to committ violent crimes was a actually.....

A GOOD THING..
