180 pounds of nuclear material missing in Canada
WABC | November 7, 2003 | John Loftus

Posted on 11/07/2003 7:47:41 PM PST by Allan

John Loftus now on Batchelor Alexander WABC reports: A student of Nuclear Engineering at McMaster University Hamilton, Ontario. has disappeared along with 180 pounds of nuclear waste stolen from the university's nuclear reactor. This happened several months ago but an alert has been ordered tonight in the USA and Canada. His name is ? Adnan al-ShoukriJumai, 27 years old, a Saudi national. A search is underway. The fear is that they may hijack a cargo plane in Canada. I hope to provide further details later on this thread.

Most Germans in 1944 were fine volk. Great humans. We still were in a world war death struggle with their nation, because of Hitler and the Nazis.

Same situation with the Islamic "nation" or Umma today. We can't ignore the hidden Mohammed Attas, can we? But until 9-10, Atta was just another "moderate Muslim," outwardly. It's really too bad that all Muslims will suffer in this conflict because of the islamofascists. It was really too bad so many "good Germans" died in WW2. Just because most Germans were nice people, didn't mean they got a pass, not in the middle of a world war the German Nazis started.

The Islamic Nazis have started a world war, and many innocents will suffer, on both sides, before the last flame is out.

MEIN KAMPF = MEIN KORAN in the hands of millions of islamofascists, and that is the sad truth. And to exinguish that insane murder fever, we may eventually, in time, need to remove the pole of their insanity, for the safety of the world. When the physical symbol of their god's omnipower is removed, their insane murder fever will break, like a pricked balloon.

Just my opinion.

This story is "troll bait"-based LOOSELY on a National Post story in October, that,in and of itself, didn't really have much more than speculation going for it.

Interesting effort ! I see the "stolen nuclear waste" has gained 100 lbs or so...

Are there any science-type FReepers out there who know what 180 lbs of nuke material can do?

I would have to know the type of nuclear material to tell you any really hard facts. If it is a byproduct of fission, you may be looking at aything from plutonium to yttrium, and each of these have different properties.

The biggest danger from a dirty bomb is the conventional blast that is designed to trigger it. Fission just isnt possible in the design of a dirty bomb. At the very least, a large area would need decontamination.

I would worry about this except...

with the incompetence of the militant Islamists, amply personified by the crazy shoe bomber Richard whatzhisface, I think the 9/11 is their best and only shot.

Militant Islamists are too stupid to pull off anything of import. Heck, most of the time, their suicide bombers blow themselves up before they leave thier own houses.

Good analysis.

I dont worry about the street level operatives...they arent very bright. Its the top echelons that are of concern, because they have engineers, doctors, etc and most have post grad degrees.

They make good plans, but the street operatives usually cannot carry them out well.

It is still unknown as to whether El Shukrijumah may have enrolled under a false name if he had, in fact, been at McMaster.

I'm not inclined to hit the panic button either, but your statement that this is "completely bogus," based on the linked article is lame, John, since the story has as many loopholes as Loftus' claims. Since when do we at FR take media stories as gospel truth, either way?

I suggest you find more reliable data in your role as official FR skeptic.

" Put into rental trucks and driven into three cities for detonation on Sunday, November 9th. (November 9th is written as "9-11" in the Middle East)."

There was some internet chatter referencing remote control on the yahoo jihadi groups.

"Story is apparently COMPLETELY bogus.."

Yeah, like I really have confidence in the statements made by Mamdouh Shoukri, McMaster's vice-president research.

Wake up and smell the roses! None of these people can be trusted. And the more they are given access to both materials and opportunities to use them, the greater "at risk" we will be.

Close the f$&king borders now! Send back all undocumented aliens and those who have overstayed their visiting privileges.

After doing a little research, I found the following:

Photo copy of the nuclear reactor at McMaster University:

Weblink to the McMaster Nuclear Reactor homepage:
http://www.science.mcmaster.ca/mnr/Main-Page/Frameset-homepage.htm

Facility also includes:

Cyclotron
Accelerator
Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) Detector
Wide Angle Neutron Scattering Facilities

"McMaster Nuclear Reactor (MNR) is a "pool-type" reactor, with a core of enriched uranium fuel moderated and cooled by a light water. It operates weekdays from 8am to 12 midnight at a thermal power of 2 MW. All facilities have thermal and epithermal capability except the Dry Tube, which is epithermal only. Irradiation times can vary from seconds to months."

There is much more information than I am posting here, but remember this is a research facility. It is used for fields of study that range broadly. To what extent students have access to the core material, remains to be seen. An interview with some of the scientists at this facility, perhaps, could provide better insight into this question.

Why do we allow universities to train foriegn nationals in "Nuclear Engineering" of all things. Doesn't that violate the nuclear nonproliferation act?

Good grief! I personally have sat on the edge of a bathtub Triga-A reactor with the lights turned off looking at the blue glow (Cerenkov Radiation) coming off the core with my own eyes. This was also at a university.

Lots of universities have research reactors.

Bathtub reactors do not have fuel enriched enough to sustain a fission type nuclear device much less a fusion one.

I am merely posting this for discussion. People who have worked at this feel free to chime in. What type of security should we expect to see at these things?

It's amazing how some people will take the word of a bunch of socialist Canadian professors over that of the FBI who have informants on campus who were the Washington Times' sources.
