I once had a tour of Hunt's Point (food terminal and distribution point) in New York, and I was stunned to find that Manhattan, were it isolated and cut off from outside food supplies on any day, would have exactly 2 days' food supply before chaos would break out.

Don't believe everything a tour guide tells you. Manhattan would not "break out in chaos" any more quickly than your own town would. Do you really think supermarkets and private homes in New York City only stock a 36-hour supply of food?

Correct. Just about every supermarket has a 48 to 72 hour stock on hand. Inventory/just in time delivery ya know...
