No, the NYT may be willing to purge Duranty in exchange for a clean bill in all other matters. But, this should not be the case. While Duranty was blatant in his support of the anti-American communists, from 1932 to 1972 the NYT was harbouring communists and published as gospel the extensions of Duranty's mendacity. Today, they print and advocate the anti-American lies of the neocommunists. Concoct some political correct story that can be spun to implicate President Bush, and it will make the NYT front and editorial pages for a week.
