The United States has offered to expand anti-terrorism cooperation with Saudi Arabia, following Saturday's deadly suicide car bombing in Riyadh. A State Department spokesman said Monday Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage made the offer during talks in the Saudi capital with Crown Prince Abdullah. He said Mr. Armitage offered to make the Saudis "fully participating partners" in the war on terrorism if they are willing to accept such a role. Saudi and U.S. officials say they believe al-Qaida carried out the suicide bombing, which killed at least 17 people, mostly Arabs, at a residential compound in Riyadh. Mr. Armitage said he believes al-Qaida wants to, in his words, "have many such events." No one has claimed responsibility for Saturday's attack, which drew widespread international condemnation.
Saudi authorities, fearing more terrorist attacks, have tightened security in the holy city of Mecca and around diplomatic facilities in Riyadh. The U.S. embassy in Riyadh and consulates in other cities remained closed to the public Monday, and Americans and other foreigners were warned to be cautious.
Saudi officials said 5,000 security personnel were sent to Mecca because of fears that terrorists would try to stage attacks on Muslim pilgrims during the holy month of Ramadan.
