3 Muslim charities lose tax-exempt status

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Treasury Department announced Friday that it has revoked the tax-exempt status of three Muslim charities that the U.S. government has accused of diverting contributions to help bankroll terrorist activities.

Treasury and the Internal Revenue Service said the action affects Benevolence International Foundation of Palos Hills, Ill., Global Relief Foundation of Bridgeview, Ill., and Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development of Richardson, Texas.

The three charities have been designated previously by the government as suspected terrorist financiers under an executive order of President Bush, the department said.

Once the government made that designation, it meant that their financial assets were frozen and people were forbidden from making donations to them, an effort to shut the groups down.

The three charities' tax-exempt status was suspended Nov. 11, the same day a new law took effect that included a provision giving the department the power to take such action. The provision allows the government to suspend the tax-exempt status of organizations designated as having supported terrorism.

When an organization loses its tax-exempt status, people cannot deduct from their federal income taxes any contributions made to the group and the organization must pay federal income tax.

"We will continue to use all available means to fight the financial war on terrorism," said Treasury Assistant Secretary for Tax Policy Pam Olson. "Today's announcement is another example of that effort."

Malawi Deports Five Suspected Al Qaeda Members

Monday, June 23, 2003

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "BLANTYRE, Malawi  — Five men suspected of running charities that funneled money to Al Qaeda have been arrested in Malawi and were to be deported from the southern African nation, intelligence officials said Monday.

The men, all foreigners, were arrested Sunday night in the southern city of Blantyre in a joint operation involving the CIA and Malawi's National Intelligence Bureau, the intelligence officials said.

An attorney for the men, Shabir Latif, said the CIA plans to take custody of the men and transfer them to the U.S. military detention center at Guantanamo Bay (search), Cuba. The claim could not be immediately confirmed.

Richard Matiya, a senior immigration official, confirmed the arrests.

The intelligence officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the men ran charities that supplied money for Al Qaeda operations in Africa and elsewhere."

I have posted a number of articles (as have others) on that
Holy Land Foundation in Richardson, Texas. But it seemed
to be a yawner of a story here on FR. That place is practically
in my back yard, too!
