The part about Cavuto calling McCain a media whore was tongue-in-check, yet too on the money to pass by. McCain learned years ago that the key to media adoration is to take views which the media agrees with are contrary to the Republicans. Going against your party makes a Republican a "maverick", and makes a Democrat invisible (Zell Miller).

In addition: Remember how the media all of a sudden couldn't get enough of another Arizona Republican, Barry Goldwater, when he openly countered the GOP on gay rights? He became the "good" Republican that they used to cast a shadow on the rest of the party.
