A new day in California. Much at stake when Schwarzenegger takes office Monday

SACRAMENTO -- Arnold Schwarzenegger will usher in a new era Monday when he takes office as California's first governor elected in a recall campaign.

His victory has created high expectations for success in dealing with entrenched problems from budget deficits to the high cost of workers' compensation.

"It also has given Republicans renewed hope for a return to political power in the nation's largest state after losing every statewide office in last November's election for the first time in more than 100 years."

Republicans take heed. We have a chance and a choice. We saw the winning formula to retake CA: Arnold.

We can nominate moderate Republicans and WIN, or "radical conservatives" (using Reagan's term for them), who have zero chance to win in CA, and let the Dems rule the most important state in the USA, after all, California is the WORLD's 5th largest economy.

Will you vote to approve Arnold's plan to issue $20 billion in bonds that turn that debt into $40 billion over the life of the bonds and saddle the next generation with payments to cover the betrayal of public trust that has occured in Sacramento in the last 5 years?

It's either the bonds or huge tax increases now, which will kill CA's economy.

Declare a fiscal emergency. Cut programs. Cut departments. Cut entitlements. Cut jobs. Undo the hiring and spending of Gray Davis. Direct state employees to report violators of immigration law to the Immigration and Naturalization Service. Do what's necessary instead of what's easy.

The bonds give him/us time to get CA's house in order without tax increases.

The payments obligated today will bring tax increases tomorrow. Not necessarily during Schwarzenegger's term but the life of this debt will last for years, putting the squeeze on taxpayers who aren't even old enough to hold a job today.

S. Kimberly Belsh De, a former official in Gov. Pete Wilson's administration, was appointed Friday as health and human services secretary by Gov.-elect Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Belsh De, 43, served as Wilson's director of the California Department of Health Services and later as deputy secretary for the California Health and Welfare Agency.

"Kimberly is a leader in the health care field, and I am confident that her public sector and philanthropic experience with issues affecting the health and well being Californians will be an asset to my administration," said Schwarzenegger in a statement.

But some social advocates criticize Belsh De for her performance in the Wilson administration. "She did everything she could to cut eligibility for disabled and poor children," said Jamie Court, executive director of the Foundation for Taxpayer and Consumer Rights.

The incoming governor also appointed Paul H. Dobson as his chief deputy legal affairs secretary.

Dobson, 57, is a veteran of the attorney general's office. He has also worked at the Sacramento firm of Neilsen, Merksamer, Parrinello, Mueller & Naylor.

We have nominated lots of moderates statewide and they have LOST, in fact most of teh tiem they lose far worse than conservatives do. Arnold won because he is a CELEBRITY.

Its going to be down right impossible if he keeps appointing the people who created our problems in the first place. The people of California did not rise up in revolt because we had too FEW environmental whackos in government.

Strange how many here on FR seem to want Arnold to fail.

The $20 billion bond proposal is a prime example.
It's the exact opposite of irresponsible.

Yesterday Hugh Hewitt was discussing it with John Campbell. Hugh compared Davis and Arnold to 2 brother-in-law's asking for a loan.

The first has a track record of squandering money, can't hold a job, is a proven liar and wants to borrow $100, 000. The second has never squandered money, is responsible, reliable and asks for $10,000. Who would you trust?

Schwarzenegger is considering a long-term $20 billion or larger bond for the March ballot to get the state's debt under control.

Arnold inherited a state with massive debt, high unemployment, and a less than rosey future. The ratio of private to public economics is one of the lowest in the nation. Simply, cutting back on government jobs, "aka welfare for work" would pitch the state into a massive depression and be political suicide.
