There's already laws against child abuse. Spanking is not child abuse, but bannig spanking will make life for abused childen only the worse, for it will drive their parents "underground" and those kids will seldom see the light of day.

The abuse will continue because the law-breakers are already committing felonies. Meanwhile, a legitimate weapon against undisciplined behavior will be removed if the Brits cut the legs out from under parents.

My daughter at 11 years of age saw the neighbor boy successfully threaten his mother with Children's Protective Services if she spanked him, so she decided to try the same thing with her mother. My wife told her, "Go ahead. You can call right after I beat your ass. Hope you like your new home." She never threatened again.

How far they've fallen. From 1976-1979 I attended Aberdeen Grammar School where we still wore uniforms; teachers used leather straps on the hands; the principal used a cane; and kids that did anything close to criminal behaviour were sent to the local reform school.

I received the leather strap a couple of times (done in front of the class for maximum effect), but never the cane.
