Sometimes we should count jihads before they hatch.
TOO many parents in the US read DR. SPOCK's book on child rearing, and it has almost ruined this country.
SPARE THE ROD, SPOIL THE CHILD.
The problem is that children need discipline. How that discipline is meted is the issue that is debated, while the real problem is ignored.
A baby must usually be communicated to physically. This means tone of voice, and spanking.
Then, there comes a point where spanking is a waste. This is much earlier than most parents think it is. CLUE: If your baby doesn't cry, you need a new punishment. Further use of physical (spanking, etc.) punishment is a waste of time.
The spanking should be abandoned as soon as possible, and the psychological punishments used. This includes staying in their room, on a nice summer day. Sitting in the corner and staring at the wall. Not being allowed to do this or that activity, etc.
During adolescence, spanking is something that should only be used for the more dangerous misbehaviors, and usually done by the Father.
(Mom giving the spanking doesn't scare any children I know)
Again, this should be reserved for something exceptional.
The BIGGEST factor in disciplining a child is this: CONSISTENCY.
That is what people need to learn. If you find yourself constantly spanking your child, or saying NO repetitively, .... you probably are not being consistent.
The biggest mistake in child rearing is this "If you do that AGAIN, I'm gonna....."
The word AGAIN is the biggest clue to failure in discipline.
The hard thing to remember is that the child (even as a baby) is as CLEVER as an adult. Failure to follow up on promises (promish to punish, promise to help, etc) is noted and etched into the consciousness and affects all future behavior. The child's LIST (what I can get away with) is immediately updated FOREVER.
