Schwarzenegger has a mandate, opportunity to govern

California voters have chosen you to replace a man who came to be intensely disliked for his passive, risk-shunning, vision-free approach to governing this most populous, most diverse -- and therefore most-difficult-to-manage -- state. And by that action, Californians have declared that they want a governor who accepts the responsibility to manage the state's affairs; they want results, not platitudes, promises or evasions.

We don't expect you to solve every problem overnight. We're adults and can handle the truth.

No histrionics, Please. :-)

Let's set a new tone here, OK?

This is a good letter, and a good post. I'm over here in New Jersey, but I have a lot of faith in Arnold. He's very smart, and like all Republicans gets no credit for being smart. I don't think California's problems are insolvable, and I think he will do well. I certainly hope he does. He came across as very sincere during the campaign and I don't think he's such a great actor that it was just faking.

"You are the closest thing to a free agent that California has elected to its highest office in living memory, and thus you can make good, if you want, on your promise to not practice "politics as usual."

===

Exactly. Arnold has no az to grind, he is not beholden to any special interests, he wants to turn CA around, by focusing and solving the key problems: CA budget and making CA business friendly.

He has a very ambitious 100 day-agenda too.

Highlights of Schwarzenegger agenda for first 100 days in office

Gov.-elect Arnold Schwarzenegger set out bold plans for his first 100 days in office, which begin Monday after he his sworn in as California's 38th governor. A look at the highlights:

_ Repeal the tripling of the state vehicle license fee.

_ Freeze spending and complete an audit of the state's $99 billion budget that his team began shortly after the Oct. 7 recall election.

_ Call a special legislative session to begin Tuesday and make spending cuts to address the current imbalance.

_ Get a "fair share" of Indian gambling revenue.

_ Renegotiate state employee union contracts "to get a better deal for taxpayers."

_ Pass a jobs package with "real workers' comp reform."

_ Submit a budget for fiscal year 2004, which begins next July 1, that closes a deficit estimated at $10 billion to $25 billion. Also, restructure debt built into this year's budget.

_ Streamline education bureaucracy and send more money to classrooms.

_ Repeal SB60, which allows undocumented immigrants to get driver's licenses after Jan. 1.

_ Pass an open-government constitutional amendment and ban fund-raising during the state budgeting process.

The most important and most difficult of those issues, such as the budget crisis, transportation and education, did not develop overnight. They were years, even decades, in the making.... Among recent governors, only your mentor, Pete Wilson, seriously attempted to address immigration-driven population growth, suburban sprawl, transportation congestion, economic evolution and the other facets of contemporary California

This is the first time that I've seen McClatchy have the courage to address California's single bigggest problem, all bet it in oblique terms. Non the less, McClatchy is finally willing to at least suggest that illegal immigration needs to be addressed.

The editorial decision must have been difficult. I can imagine how serious McClatchy must feel the problem is to abandon their liberal core. Could it have possibly been the announcemnts that California is headed for a $60B structural deficit prinicipally caused by the effects wave after wave of Mexico's poor squatting in California for the last 50 years?
