The funny thing about Sgt Pepper is that it is the Beatles response the Beach Boys album that carried "Good Vibrations" Paul is said to have heard the Brian Wilson effort, been stunned by it and wondered "How are we ever gonna top this". Guess he answered that question!!

I don't recall Good Vibrations coming out until the mid 70's...and the Beatles were no more

That's interesting, because I remember seeing an interview with Brian Wilson talking about listening to a Phil Spector produced "wall of sound" song on the radio one day and having to pull over because he was so blown away by the sound of it. It was after that that the Beach Boys did "Pet Sounds", using some of that 'wall of sound' technique.
