I heard his last show. He said that the back operations were a failure and he needed the pain medication to get through the pain. Now he is off the meds, how does he deal with the pain? I think I'd rather take an addictive drug the rest of my life than live in chronic pain.

Perhaps the pain went away but the addiction remained- as is often the case?

Chronic pain tends to alter the way a person thinks about that pain, so that often people feel pain w/o any reason for the pain. However, probably what happened is that the addiction remained regardless of pain.
