I'd give him a month and some nut is gonna give to him. He'd last about as long as Lennon's killer, Chapman would.

I don't understand... please enlighten me.... I was under the impression, insane or not, that if you attack a President of the US, it is automatic life sentence... Damn, what is wrong with this picture? Next, Squeaky will be demanding weekend visits with charlie.

Hinckley's parents have spent every dime they had on his "I'm crazy" defense and the jury bought it. Because he was declared insane, his case gets reviewed periodically by the courts. This time, three judges--including two who said he shouldn't have unsupervised visits previously--said that he's okay now. From what I understand, he's already been able to go on day trips with Mommy and Daddy, along with a mental hospital staffer, and because he's been such a good boy, now Mommy and Daddy want to have him home for weekends, with the ultimate goal of their dear sonny boy home permanently. From what I heard yesterday, the USSS will follow him everywhere, but my guess is Mommy and Daddy will say that they're picking on their sweet boy.

He should be doing life in a supermax federal pen.

I think it should automatically be a capital offense to attempt to assassinate the president.

I agree. And they should narrow the definition of legally insane dramatically so that we don't have another Hinckley waltzing around malls with Mommy & Daddy on his days out.

LL astutley points out what the real crux of the problem surrounding Hinckley's case really is.

"This opinion comes from the fact that I don’t think those who work with the human mind can be trusted with judgements of this kind. They have a natural tendency to justify their profession, to validate it, by letting people go."

'nuff said.

As I said before concerning LL's take on matters such as this, he's a virtual dowsing rod for truth.

...to which we may now add, clarity.

"This is why in the case of Hinckley, and in fact anyone who has committed a violent offense, I believe that psychiatrists should be allowed to free anybody from an asylum as long as they are legally responsible for the subsequent actions of those they turn loose.

I feel the same way about parole boards. Let them free anybody they want, as long as every asset they have, and a very large bond to boot, is on the line should any of their reclamation projects turn out to be not quite as rehabilitated as these “experts” believe.

That should reduce recidivism in America."

As usual, LL makes good sense.

Thanks for the ping, WD!

From a Thomas Sowell column....

"Experts pay no price for being wrong, even when children, parents and society at large pay an enormous price."

From a City Journal article by E. Fuller Torrey on the mentally ill.....

"It is politically incorrect within the psychiatric community to link violence with mental illness."

The last half of the last century saw entirely too much worship and sacrifice to the new gods....The Experts.

I have a real problem with the "insanity" defense. Yes, it should be a valid defense. However comma when johnny boy is all "cured", (so sayeth the experts) then he should go straight to the regular prison population. In other words an insanity defense should merely get a padded cell, not possibility of release back into society.

Michael Reagan was being interviewed on TV this night about the Hinckley unsupervised visits. Mike was asked if he thought that Hinckley would be safe, given all the Americans who revere Mike's father. Mike quipped, "About as safe as CBS!" .... pretty funny. The interviewer then added something like, "I guess we can look for him on Showtime."
