ALT was listed as one of the tests done on donated blood from the list I gave in a previous post. It is a liver enzyme test which you can read more about
http://www.medicinenet.com/Liver_Blood_Tests/article.htm here. There is more accurate testing now but blood banks still use the ALT in addition to the others.

Thanks for the link, but I know the usual meaning of ALT already, i.e. alanine aminotransferase, which is an enzyme most commonly associated with liver pathology.
The reason I asked the question in comment# 80 was because ALT was in the middle of a list of infectious diseases in comment# 79.
I thought maybe there was a new abbreviation of ALT that I didn't know yet.
Checking the concentration of ALT is used as a screening test. When it's sufficiently elevated, then they will test for various antibodies to the Hepatitis B virus(HBV) and the Hepatitis C virus(HCV).
ALT is a crude indicator of liver pathology. It can be elevated due to other causes of hepatitis or other causes of liver pathology.

They donate the blood that Americans won't donate.
But seriously, many blood banks pay for blood. If you're a poor illegal looking for money, that would be one way to get it.

Naturally, you are right. I was referring to my post #68 in which I enumerated the tests usually performed in blood bank labs. I thought you were referring to that. I noticed your profession after I posted. Sorry, of course, you know. I was just trying to clarify.

Once again, just for your information, blood banks do not pay for blood for patients in hospitals. The FDA took care of this some time ago. Plasma centers pay for plasma and some blood is paid for by research companies for research only, not patients.
