JEDDAH, 18 November 2003 A Jizan court has sentenced a young woman to 500 lashes for allegedly spending time alone with a young man and marrying him hours after divorcing her former husband, Al-Madinah reported on Sunday.
According to the court ruling, the groom will also get 500 lashes while the mazoun who married them will get 30 lashes for violating Shariah rules.
The woman was on bad terms with her former husband and entered into a romantic relationship with the young man. But under Shariah, she was required to wait for three months before marrying another man, the paper said.

500 lashes is a death sentence by torture.

But under Shariah, she was required to wait for three months before marrying another man. So three months later her former husband, father and brothers could pour gas over her head, strike a match, and watch their "family honor" being restored. How lovely. Islam is sick.

Therefore, to restore American honor after 911 we should just nuke every muslim nation including Saudi Arabia right now and watch them burn!

How lovely. Islam is sick. But it's pro-death, so it's politically correct.
She was adulterous, knew the risks, and paid the penalty.

Sad but true, I was thinking the same thing. But why wait 3 months? They could have begun the torture right off, and lit the final match when evidence of the 'new' relationship presented itself. Now the 'law' interferred with their more complete, timely 'justice'.
What am I thinking? As soon as the lashes are administered, the poor 'sinner' woman or her new hubby or the man who married them (or all 3) will turn up dead, honor restored. After all, can lashes really restore honor? Nothing restores honor like death, preferably of women (evil temptresses...).

I'm by no means trying to defend it, but I think they break the punishment up almost like community service. They give a sentence like 50 lashes over 10 occasions.

If they break the punishment up, it's just to change lash-givers so they have more energy."

Personally, I have never heard of the punishment being given out in segments. I'm not saying you're incorrect, I have just never read that anywhere before...and I do a heck of a lot of visiting middle eastern-related web sites.

Well, certainly a sentence of 500 lashes, if given in one go, is a death sentence. I would imagine that anything over 30 lashes or so would be a death sentence, if they were administered all at once. I thought I had also heard that the punishment is administered over a time, making it all the more horrific, but I cannot cite a source for this belief.

The Islams are just behind the times - as if Christians haven't been there too? Let the religion that is without sin cast the first stone.
"Happy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones." Psalms 137:9 KJV)
"I do further promise and declare, that I will, when opportunity presents, make and wage relentless war, secretly or openly, against all heretics, Protestants and Liberals, as I am directed to do and to extirpate and exterminate them from the face of the whole earth, and that I will spare neither sex, age nor condition and that I will hang, waste, boil, flay, strangle and bury alive these infamous heretics; rip up the stomachs and wombs of their women and crush their infants' heads against the wall, in order to annihilate forever their execrable race." --Pope Paul III, 1576

Also, the 3 month wait is to make sure she isn't pregnant by her first husband. Of course, nowadays, there are quicker ways to check, but these laws were written before EPT.
There are a few elements of Islamic Law that are sensible (the three month wait, for example). But over all, they're a savage bunch, IMHO.

Also for punishments specifically in Saudi Arabia,
A sentence of 800 lashes is usually administered in stages. In the case of the harshest flogging recorded by Amnesty International - an Egyptian sentenced to 4,000 lashes for robbery in 1990 - the punishment was reportedly implemented at 50 strokes every two weeks. After each beating, the man was left with bruised and bleeding buttocks, unable to sit for three or four days afterwards.
