There is a surprising amount of information indicating that the "indigenous" predation was a significant factor in the Quaternary Extinctions (time when over 300 species of Ice Age megafauna went extinct).
Sites are numerous where bones have weapons imbedded in them, where bones were burned and then split for the marrow, etc.
PETA freaks wouldn't have liked the appetitive behavior of the "indigenous".
