Wyo. Seeks Name Change for 'Obscene' Road

November 21, 2003 Wyo. Seeks Name Change for 'Obscene' Road By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Filed at 8:23 a.m. ET

POWELL, Wyo. (AP) -- High school kids routinely steal the road signs as trophies. Pastor Bud Wells can't stand to put the road name on his church literature.

County Road 6FU southwest of Cody got its name in 1980, when Park County adopted an alpha-numeric road naming system.

It's raised many eyebrows over the years, and now a group of residents are asking county commissioners for a change.

More than 30 property owners have signed a petition asking for dual designation, or two names for the road.

``The name of this road, with its obscene overtone, has really been a thorn for me,'' resident Terry Hinkle said. ``It is probably one of the most embarrassing road names the county has in the books. There is no other road in the United States, I can assure you, that has the road name FU.''

In addition to County Road 6FU, petitioners want the road named Sheep Mountain Road, though some commissioners say that may confuse dispatchers. The county already has a Sheep Mountain Lane.

About 40 roads in Park County have two names. However, county officials say that doesn't mean they don't cause problems.

``There is no policy on how to handle road name changes of this type,'' county engineer Frank Page said. ``If we start changing road names now, we could open up a floodgate here of everyone wanting to change their road's name.''

Issues could also arise with the postal service, county dispatch, fire department, license plates, utility companies and even personal checks.

``I can't disagree that the road name is ugly obscene,'' chief information officer Mike Conners said. ``But dual designations are generally a bad idea when dealing with E-911 and dispatch. There's already a Sheep Mountain Lane and that could be very confusing in an emergency.''

Commissioners rejected a similar request in 1991, but appeared to agree something should be done this time around, asking residents to present them with a list of potential road names at a future meeting.

``The particular nomenclature of the road is problematic,'' commission chair Tim Morrison said. ``6FU has to go; it has to change.''

Maybe I'm dense, but I don't get it. What's so obscene about this name?

What's wrong with me?
I don't get what's obscene about the road or your joke, either.

Have I gotten old?

1. Write "3MTA3" on a sheet of paper.

2. Hold paper up to mirror. Read mirror image.

You bet their ass they'd bend over backwards and find a way to change it to Martin Luther King road.

This is nothing. You should have seen the license plate that my state issued me. It was so pornographic that I refused to put it on my car and had to get a custom plate.

Outstanding! I'm surprised they didn't catch on at first glance.

They didn't get the significance of "Three Mike Tango Alfa Three" until someone slapped a map overlay on backwards, and my security element was just about dead-center, all by its lonesome.

"OU812" was a Van Hagar (Van Halen with Sammy Hagar) album.

So instead of F.U., they want it named "Sheep Mountin' Road".

Is this in Wyoming, or West Virginia?

When I went through EOD school in the 60's when Vietnam was going hot and heavy, we had a number of Navy Refreser classes in the school.

I used to enjoy telling gross jokes in highschool and college until I met some of these sailors. They all thought my gross jokes were personal sea stories which pretty much described their "normal" everyday lifestyle. These guys were a bunch of animals.

Anyway back to the story at hand, the designatiton for the Navy classes was 1Q or 2Q. Normally, they had no more than two classes going through at the same time. But, like I said, things were heating up for Vietnam and they had four classes when I was there, and the animals of the animals seemed to all be in class four.

I can still remember the classes reporting when we had formations. I will never forget the loud "4Q Sir, All Present".

I could write a book on some of the things these guys pulled while they terrorized the EOD School and the Indianhead area, especially the episodes with the pig.
