People Magazine Names Depp Sexiest Man (modified)

NEW YORK - People magazine has named Johnny Depp the "Sexiest Man Alive 2003," saying the actor, known for his "brooding eccentricities," has mellowed since becoming a father.

Depp, star of this year's "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," has two young children with his girlfriend, French actress and pop singer Vanessa Paradis.

"Because he arrived at his new, happy place without selling out, without becoming slick or packaged or politically correct, he is a hero to his fans and an idol to his young co-stars," People says in its Dec. 1 issue.

The 40-year-old actor is known for hiding under layers of hats and blankets in his private life and behind oddball characters in his films, the magazine said. "But he is finally coming to terms with his own charisma..." Almost.

Depp has denied comments he made were meant to be "anti-American". The 40-year-old star was quoted as saying America was "like a dumb puppy that has big teeth than can hurt".

The actor had also been quoted saying that the US was a "broken toy", and that he would urge his French-based children to explore it and then "get out".

In an apology issued by his publicist, the Kentucky-born Depp said his comment was referring to the US being a young, growing nation compared to Europe.

He added that he now lived in France because his wife, the singer Vanessa Paradis, was French, not because he had renounced his citizenship.

The actor said he was "an American. I love my new country and have great hopes for it.

"My deepest apologies to those who were offended, affected, or hurt by this insanely twisted deformation of my words and intent," he said so eloquently.

Depp also has starred in "Edward Scissorhands," "What's Eating Gilbert Grape," "Sleepy Hollow" and "Chocolat." His upcoming movies include "J.M. Barrie's Neverland." A media mogul, who asked for confidentiality, said, "You can't make this stuff up."

People magazine named Michael Jackson first runner-up.

I always find it ironic that they declare a "sexiest man alive" annually.

LOL. I guess that doesn't bode too well for the previous winners!

I kid you not.

Well, it's that writhing slitheriness that must make women swoon.

Another very sexy guy, who is a singer, songwriter in Austin, and ex-boyfriend of Sandra Bullock is Bob Schneider. We have several of his CDs. Just love his music. Latest CD is kind of New Orleans funk style music like Harry Connick Jr. He also does RR, jazz, blues, country, ballads, everything.

LOL. I'm always kinda leery when a stud-muffin has his photo taken and half his face is in shadow. Makes me wonder if perhaps one side of his face is okey-doke and the other half is Mikey Jackson in drag.

But I've seen Jackman in some movies. I agree with you, I think, that he'd be a better choice than Depp. Although us Texas cowpokes are kinda hesitant about voting in "Sexiest Man" contests.
