Another Mugging on Capitol Hill (Democratic Party, R.I.P.)
The Hill ^ | November 26, 2003 | Albert Eisele

Posted on 11/25/2003 7:53 PM PST by quidnunc

The Democratic Party, one of the twin pillars of the American political system and a major force in Congress for much of the 20th century, died last weekend while working on Capitol Hill. It was 175 years old. The cause of death was injuries suffered from an apparent mugging while trying to rescue the New Deal, the New Frontier and the Great Society.

Capitol Police Chief Terrance Gainer said the victim’s body was found Monday in the excavation for the Capitol Visitor Center, shortly after Congress cleared the way for overhauling Medicare, the Great Society program created in 1965 that was considered the party’s most important legacy.

The time of death was uncertain, but it probably occurred between early Saturday morning and Monday afternoon, Gainer said.

Even though the body bore signs of a violent struggle, Gainer did not rule out the possibility of suicide, citing reports that the victim had been severely depressed since November 2000.

Gainer said he is investigating several leads, including a tip that three top House Republicans — Speaker Denny “Hardball” Hastert (Ill.), Majority Leader Tom “The Sledgehammer” DeLay (Texas) and Ways and Means Chairman Bill “Take No Prisoners” Thomas (Calif.) — were seen making threatening gestures toward the victim in recent days.

He also said two surviving Senate Democrats, John “Huey Long Didn’t Go Far Enough” Breaux (La.) and Max “Let’s Make a Deal, Any Deal” Baucus (Mont.), were considered possible suspects because of their involvement in efforts to help Republicans overhaul Medicare.

“There are a lot of potential suspects who wished the victim ill will,” Gainer said. He indicated that he intends to interrogate AARP Chief Executive William Novelli, Republican National Committee Chairman Ed Gillespie and conservative radio talk-show host Rush Limbaugh.

Hastert, while denying that he or his colleagues had anything to do with the victim’s demise, said he has no regrets that Congress will now become a unicameral body, like that in Nebraska.

Yes, but the left is mobilizing a rear guard movement in academia.

This shift is the shifting of the GOP into the party of the socialist state. During this time of "winning," Republicans are outspending anything the Democrats have ever dreamed of spending.

Runaway government spending is no cause for celebration. Those of us who are conservatives and have worked so hard to help elect Republicans have been betrayed by those elected.

I do not identify with the Socialist Republican Party now in charge.

You ought to post Strauss and Howe's essay about the effects of 9/11 as a separate article. I think it safe to say that we ARE in a Fourth Turning.

I am also convinced that President Bush has read that book. It would not be surprising, since he was a history major.

Happy Thanksgiving MM!

This is beyond amusing. All the chronic FR malcontents are like rats careening aimlessly in a maze right now. There's no phony Buchanan Reform Party candidacy to rallly their anti-everything bitterness around, so they are just bouncing off walls here! LOL

They're all going to just withdraw their vaunted support from Bush and the GOP ... again for the third or fourth time.

It's dysfunctional beyond belief, but what we have on Free Republic is a diseased little fellowship of quitters, ne'er do wells and unappeasables who have NO direction, zippo power and zero institutional leverage. They have a helluva lot of personal grievance, though, and are beseiged up the inhuman yin yang.

Since John Robinson is re-engineering the forum interface, perhaps he can set up a "Festivus" forum for the airing of outrageous grievences foisted upon RealTrueOnlyPrincipledPatriotConservatives TM in what used to be America, but is now Amerika.

It's going to be a fandango watching the desperate construction of a Tancredo, Roy Moore or God help us ... Tom McClintock ... third party groundswell here on FR.

Happy Thanksgiving, Arne!

I would not be surprised to see an attempt to challenge Bush in New Hampshire, or with a third party (although I think the deadline for New Hampshire has passed or is fast upon us). It won't work this time, though.

Did you ever read the book The Fourth Turning? Here is a short essay which explains their theory and what they think is going on. September 11, 2001

This explains the discombobulation of many that we see here. They do not understand there has been a sea change in the nation's attitude. I am also entertained by the gnashing of teeth by some I encounter.

Heheheh.

we hope and pray that the tax cuts continue and that the application of private solutions in medicare/healthcare and education will result in a historic reversal of socialism

Haven't read the book MM.

But, they haven't figured Bush out yet. The guy is about audacious, STRUCTURAL revolutionary change. The Education bill was spending money to move power from D.C. to local authority. The Prescription bill is the proverbial nose of the camel leading to the first private managment of any facet of that leviathan black hole. That's why the Democrats are apoplectic about it.

It's hilarious how the "jig is up" for all our third party poseurs here: they're with the Democrats 90% of the time these days. They're just opposed to any political entity in power, whatever party. They embrace Reagan because the last time they supported anybody was 1984, and they probably sat that one out and kvetched from sideline then too!

Get your popcorn, this is going to be like watching a John Waters movie, without the feminine charms of Divine.

It is amazing to me that so many "experts" don't see what is happening. Some of the pundits and talk show hosts are soon going to go the way of the dinosaur.

Well, you are right. Read that essay if you have time. Meanwhile, I also am enjoying the show. It is fascinating to see who gets what's going on (Newt, Tony Blankley, Fred Barnes) and who doesn't (Rush, George Will).

Thank G-d you are not a Republican strategist, or we'd never win a single election.

I disagree! Nothing has changed. The big spending LIBERALS (Rs, Ds and Is)have scored another victory. Too many voters are still driven by party affiliation!

Miss Marple, in the spirit of holiday exchage, I'll give you this essay "The Accidental Radical" to consider.

I think the author has some unique insights into the huge risk, huge return gambit George W. Bush is playing right now.
