I own a VW New Beetle. I've had only one problem in nearly the year I've had it.... a CEL light. Its a German car but I'm far from disappointed and I rave about its reliability and the way it handles on the road - fantastic! Of course, not every one will have a glitch free car so I can empathize with those who wind up with a lemon German car.

I have 2002 TDI version, had to bring it in for a recall item, something about a switch.
Still thing the darn thing is neat and while everybody had yo yoing gas prices diesel stay at 154.9 all summer.
Have a 96 Jeep with 115,000+ on it have had to replace both oxygen senors and a radiator and a radio, other than that no problems.
