Safety Tips for Women

Important Safely Tips for Women

1. Tip from Tae Kwon Do: The elbow is the strongest point on your body. If you are close enough to use it, do!

2. Learned this from a tourist guide to New Orleans. If a robber asks for your wallet and/or purse, DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM. Toss it away from you...chances are that he is more interested in your wallet and/or purse than you and he will go for the wallet/purse. RUN LIKE MAD IN THE OTHER DIRECTION!

3. If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car: Kick out the back tail lights and stick your arm out the hole and start waving like crazy. The Driver won't see you but everybody else will. This has saved lives.

4. Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping, eating, working, etc., and just sit (doing their checkbook, or making a list, etc. DON'T DO THIS! The predator will be watching you, and this is the perfect opportunity for him to get in on the passenger side, put a gun to your head, and tell you where to go. AS SOON AS YOU GET INTO YOUR CAR, LOCK THE DOORS AND LEAVE.

5. A few notes about getting into your car in a parking lot, or parking garage:
a. Be aware: look around you, look into your car, at the passenger side floor, and in the back seat.
b. If you are parked next to a big van, enter your car from the passenger door. Most serial killers attack their victims by pulling them into their vans while the women are attempting to get into their cars.
c. Look at the car parked on the driver's side of your vehicle, and the passenger side. If a male is sitting alone in the seat nearest your car, you may want to walk back into the mall, or work, and get a guard/policeman to walk you back out. IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY.

6. ALWAYS take the elevator instead of the stairs. (Stairwells are horrible places to be alone and the perfect crime spot).

7. If the predator has a gun and you are not under his control, ALWAYS RUN! The predator will only hit you (a running target) 4 in 100 times; And even then, it most likely WILL NOT be a vital organ. RUN!

8. As women, we are always trying to be sympathetic: STOP IT! It may get you raped, or killed. Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was a good-looking, well-educated man, who ALWAYS played on the sympathies of unsuspecting women. He walked with a cane, or a limp, and often asked "for help" into his vehicle or with his vehicle, which is when he abducted his next victim.

9. Another Safety Point Fwd: Crying Baby. Someone just told me that her friend heard a crying baby on her porch the night before last, and she called the police because it was late and she thought it was weird. The police told her "Whatever you do, DO NOT open the door." The lady then said that it sounded like the baby had crawled near a window, and she was worried that it would crawl to the street and get run over. The policeman said, "We already have a unit on the way, whatever you do, DO NOT open the door." He told her that they think a serial killer has a baby's cry recorded and uses it to coax women out of their homes thinking that someone dropped off a baby. He said they have not verified it, but have had several calls by women saying that they hear baby’s cries outside their doors when they're home alone at night.

This e-mail should be taken seriously because the Crying Baby theory was mentioned on America's Most Wanted this past Saturday when they profiled the serial killer in Louisiana.

I received this email from a friend. There are some good safety tips here, some which I hadn't thought about before, and some good reminders. I'm sure FReepers have a few more tips to add.

What you post is regrettable but true. When we Americans are not busy thinking like lawyers, we have to think like criminals!

Knees, elbows, the heel of your hand applied to the nose of the aggressor, fingernails, biting, stomping down hard with your foot on the perp's instep and above all... fight dirty and fight to inflict pain and injury!

And then go back to shopping. :-)

I guess that depends on whether you are grabbed from the front or from behind.

10. If a guy you don't know asks you out, never go! He might be a serial killer.

11. If you get a flat tire, don't get out of the car! And if someone offers help, don't open the window! Just sit there until you starve. It's not worth the danger that someone might assault you.

12. If your milk is within a day or two of expiring, throw it away! Don't take the risk that it might be spoiled and give you a horrible disease...

Sorry for the sarcasm, but some of these (don't sit in a car doing your checkbook, never take the stairs) are just silly. The chances of something bad happening are so infinitesimal that it's not worth turning your life upside down. (Besides, why can't someone assault you on an elevator? It's happened loads of times.)

Life is risk. We should weigh the risks and decide whether it makes sense to take them on. Not live our lives trying to wrap ourselves in cotton batting.

That's not to say all these tips are bad - a couple were reasonable. But there's no need to live like a paranoid.

The article is misleading. The Elbow, specifically the forarm portion, is the hardest or most solid part of the human body. You're right that a forearm shot dosn't hit as hard as other strikes, like a stomp on an attacker whose on the ground. I don't know if an upward knee hits harder than a kick or puch. Each kind of strike has prefered targets though, and a woman can probably hurt a male attacker worst with a knee to the groin than a forearm blow to the chest (figuring the woman is shorter and will have a harder time hitting the attacker up high in the chin or nose.)

Go to the range and practice, practice practice.

Gun Control = Hitting your target (ALWAYS)

Another thing, when pumping gas, lock the doors. There have been cases where throats have been slashed from the back seat. The killers get in the car while women are pumping gas.

Actually, if the woman were shorter than her attacker, the elbow swing (assuming he is behind her) is going to strike the attacker in the stomach region. That could definitely make an attacker double over.

You may think they are silly...but it's important to know your environment. I live in a safe community, but my habits change when I am in the city or someplace unfamiliar.

Ah, the joys of shopping amidst the murderous masses. I prefer shopping online. It's easier on my nerves and some of those female bargain hunters scare the begonias outta me!

We went to a local branch of our bank one night to get money out of the ATM. There was a car there with no lights and the motor running. Both of us felt like this was not a good night to get money so we left. It may have been innocent but we did not want to take a chance. So, if a situation does not seem right, leave!

I agree that our society has become risk-obsessed, but there are ways to incorporate these safety tips into your life without sacrificing anything. For example, since reading this list two years ago, I've made it a practice to lock my car door as soon as I get into the car, no matter where I am. Now the habit is automatic, so it's no sacrifice. If someone comes for me when I'm sitting in my (locked) car, I'll have a much better chance than if the door were unlocked.

More dramtically, the advice about running from someone with a gun saved my sister's life. When she was first grabbed, she thought she would go with him so that he wouldn't shoot her. But then she remembered reading that it's worth it to run. Today, she's ALIVE, which I bet she wouldn't be if she'd gone with that guy. If someone tells you to go with him "or else", you can bet he'll kill you eventually anyway (probably after raping you); whereas if you run, you still have a chance.

In summary, I, too, roll my eyes at 20/20 reports about the dangers of, say, eggs. But I think this list is one of the saner, more reasonable lists of safety precautions. And the list is akin to any diet: even if you only follow it 70% of the time, you'll lose weight.
