W., Underestimated correction. Should be, W., MisUnderestimated
You beat me to it. One of my favorite "Bushisms".
(I told doubters during the 2000 campaign that Dubya was gonna' be a
slightly-tongue-tied Reagan...for once in my life I guessed right about something.)

Those last words capture much about this president: "Confident, determined, and unafraid." PING A LING

I never did get why people say that Dubya is such a terrible speaker. I have always enjoyed his easy and honest style and have found him to express himself with clarity. Perhaps it's that honesty thing that totally trips them up, so completely foreign is it to them.

Speech writers deserve credit, but without a good delivery, they're just words.
The Press would have us all believe that George W. Bush couldn't put together two sentence's, yet alone a whole speech. The Speech writer is also groomed by the President and his closest advisors in order to convey the President's vision. I read David Frum's book and it was a great insight to how a speech writer is moulded into the Presidents speech writer

So many memorable lines in this wonderful piece. One that caught my eye:
a consistently high level of rhetorical power, satisfying to the soul as well as to the occasion.I feel sorry for the critics and Bush haters who blindly refuse to experience the greatness of our President. I've given up trying to understand their hatred.

Anybody have some other top notch memories? I have only dim memories of it now, and a general impression of it, and some recollection of comments I've read about it afterward, but Ronald Reagan's speech for Barry Goldwater -- I think it was the nominating speech, but I'm not sure -- at the 1964 Republican National Convention at the Cow Palace in San Francisco was a stem-winder and an American classic.
And giving credit as an orator, Jesse Jackson gave a helluva speech at the 1984 Democratic National Convention. I didn't agree with anything he said, but he proved he had a silver tongue.
To: CROSSHIGHWAYMAN
Oh, yeah -- almost forgot.
Douglas Macarthur, his retirement speech to the Corps of Cadets at West Point. Some cadet fortunately recorded it, on one of those old boxy reel-to-reel recorders, the ones with the 5" spools. Thank God he did!
To: lentulusgracchus
Although I doubt it actually happened in quite the way the Bard presents it, Henry V's St. Crispian Day Speech at Agincourt is the most intense, riveting, and inspirational thing I've ever heard, or read. I still get goosebumps whenever I see Kenneth Branaugh's version.
