PETA billboard with Virgin Mary coming down

(East Providence-AP) -- A billboard sign urging people to go vegetarian that shows the Virgin Mary cradling a chicken carcass is coming down.

The animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PEE-Tah) paid three-thousand dollars to rent the billboard off Interstate 195 for a month. The sign was put up a week ago.

Some religious leaders have complained it's offensive and the sign has been defaced with spray paint.

The company that owns the billboard says the sign will be taken down over the next few days and P-E-T-A will get part if its payment back.

Robert Murray, co-owner of Massachusetts-based Murray Outdoor Communications, doesn't want the company in the middle of debate over the sign.

Murray says he sees no problem with the sign.

P-E-T-A spokesman Bruce Friedrich said the group is disappointed but plans to put it on billboards in other cities around the country.

someone should go to Mr. Murray and have a long talk about religous persecution and how people like him need to spend some time in Boston and Concord remembering why he has free enterprise; it is because people of faith fought for the right. a little pressure on some of his other customers may not hurt either.

Another consideration is that nowhere in the Bible do you find an expression of a principle, a story, or an observation from the viewpoint of an animal. In the very book from which we get Mary and Jesus, and all the Old Testament history and parables of law, the only reference to animals are as beasts of burden and food. I don't think there are even any references to pets.

PETA bring religious connotations to their campaign is simply laughable.

When Popeye's Chicken bought many KFC stores in L.A. they had a billboard campaign: Quoting:

"THE BEST BREASTS IN LOS ANGELES...WITHOUT PLASTIC SURGERY"

The billboards lasted 3 days. They went up on Friday and down on Monday because Gloria Allred and NOW threatened to sue.

I wonder what possible grounds a suit could be brought? I may "chicken out" if I was actually threatened, but I would be tempted to just laugh at any such threat if I were Popeyes. They would get more publicity out of any such stupid suit from NOW.
