Ex-secret police general shot dead in Baghdad

BAGHDAD, December 07 (Online): Gunmen shot dead on Saturday a former secret police general who was in charge of western Baghdad under ousted Saddam Hussein, a witness told AFP. Gen Khalaf Alussi died at his home under a hail of bullets fired by four men, said Wissam Idan, a 24-year-old building worker at the house in the capital’s al-Yarmuk area. The general, who died on the spot, headed the feared secret police in the al-Kharkh district on the west bank of the Tigris river.

Meanwhile, a member of the paramilitary Iraqi civil defence corps (ICDC) was wounded in a rocket attack north of Baghdad as US troops launched a major operation against insurgent bombers west of the capital.

Elsewhere, a funeral for two Iraqis killed in a firefight with US troops in Samarra turned violent, with mourners killing a security officer and chanting pro-Saddam Hussein slogans over his body.

In Mosul, three gunmen shot dead an Iraqi policeman on his way to work, police said. The victim was a 24-year-old recent graduate of a police academy that has received support and guidance from coalition forces.

In Nineva province, whose capital is Mosul, US troops captured 16 people, 10 of them allegedly planning attacks against coalition forces, the US military said. The others included a weapons dealer and black-market merchants, said Master Sgt Kelly Tyler.

In south-central Iraq a bomb was found hidden in a box outside the main entrance of the new police training academy which the US-led coalition opened in the Shia Muslim pilgrimage city of Najaf. In the same region, a Hungarian convoy came under fire, in the latest attack by insurgents on a US ally. "There were no injuries or killed," said a spokesman for the Polish-led multinational division which patrols the region.

Also, US troops acting on a tip-off about one of the wives of Saddam Hussein’s fugitive number two Izzat Ibrahim detained the brother of a security guard from Ibrahim’s office. The detention was the latest step in a massive country-wide manhunt for Ibrahim, who has a 10-million dollar bounty on his head. Troops took away the man, whose name was not immediately available, after they raided a house in south-east Baghdad.

Also on Saturday, the US troops bombarded pockets of resistance outside Kirkuk, Iraqi police said.

End.

Well. I am sure her tears will rain down upon the dry parched desert in a flood that will rival the biblical flood of Noah.

Could be he was cooperating w/ us and that's why he wasn't locked up, and also why he was shot.. More likely reason why he wasn't locked up is because the US didn't want to protect his sorry hide. I expect that there are a lot of members of the former regime who would dearly love to be in US custody. Threatening to release some of the bad guys we do have locked up is probably a powerful motivator in getting information out of them.

A little off topic, but some Freepers might want to check out the on-line commentary section of this Web site about Bush, Blair, US politics, war against terrorism, etc. One person -- "Sammy Jabareen, Canada" -- defending Bush and the US while a number of other nutcases attack Bush. Kind of funny. It is titled "Perplexed Bush dekes?" and is located here:

We need lots more of this "Operation Iraqi Phoenix." We need to effectively decapitate the entire old order. If we don't, the minute allied forces leave, the country will be plunged into a civil war as Baathist holdouts attempt to regain control. Kill the Baathists down to Colonels and factory managers etc, if you want peace in this country in the long run.

Exactly. Threaten to put them right back into their old houses....without bodyguards. Tariq Aziz, for example.

DU must be deeply saddened by this. Meanwhile, they still hope our troops get massacred by any Osama lover in a Burkha.

Sounds like somebody didn't like this guy or his leadership under Saddam. I doubt a whole lot of people are crying over this guy.

Or a case of "dead men tell no tales".

Either way, good riddance to bad rubbish.

Threatening to extradite them to Israel works even better.

No politically-correct pussies in the IDF's and Mossad's Intelligence Corps.
