If you are java enabled it gives you a small pop up alerting you to mail or messages.
My Panicware Popup Stopper kills it. Must HOLD CONTROL!

I had the same problem, but if you click "Allow pop-up windows from this domain" on the Pop-Up Stopper toolbar, it should work. Mine does.
