Talk-radio caller hurt in SUV accident Associated Press

MIDDLE ISLAND, N.Y. - A woman who was on her cell phone discussing the Michael Jackson case on a radio call-in show was hurt when her sport utility vehicle -- stopped on the side of the road -- was hit from behind.

Cheryl Picker was talking to WABC 770 morning show hosts Curtis Sliwa and Ron Kuby just before 9 a.m. Tuesday when the crash was heard on the radio. Kuby was heard saying, "Cheryl, are you OK? Cheryl? Cheryl?"

Picker, 44, was taken to a hospital, where she was listed in stable condition Tuesday. The hospital would not comment on her condition early today.

"I never call in to shows," Picker said.

She said she had stopped on the side of the William Floyd Parkway when her SUV was hit.

"There have been a lot of strange incidences in 12 years on the radio, but this takes the cake," Sliwa said. "The only thing that came close was two hours I spent on the air talking a jumper down from the George Washington Bridge."

Did a search - no FR matches under "SUV" or "SUV talk radio".

......Must have been a lib driving going after two hated groups: talk radio callers and SUV drivers.

My favorite cell phone accident was the poor woman who got killed when she lost control and plowed into a Verizon wireless store front.

""I never call in to shows," Picker said. "

Ummm...I don't think she can say "never" anymore.

Stopping on the side of the freeway is for emergencies -

- I suppose getting through to a talk show to discuss Michael Jackson qualifies ?

Just what the hell did the fact that she was driving a SUV have to do with the reporting of this incident? The media have to incluse the nasty SUV word in the headline of any article, even if only the person saw one in the previous 24 hours.

Another reason liberal talk radio will never make it, Democrats can't drive and talk at the same time.

Couple years ago Massachusetts Gubernatorial (Senatorial?)candidate Jackie Robinson was being interviewed on the radio while he drove through Boston.

All of a sudden, whack!

"I've been hit! I've just been in an accident!"

Typical of the guy. Nothing went his way.

Ron Kuby is a Liberal. Curtis Sliwa is not.

This was the last thing I heard on Curtis to Kuby yesterday before leaving for work. Couldn't believe what was going on. Kuby asked her, "Do you need a lawyer?"

And BTW, the car wasn't only hit from behind; it was flipped!

Pulling off on the side of the road makes you a sitting duck for a drunk driver. Especially in the dark. Sitting with your parking lights on actually provides the drunks a better "aim" to "follow" the car "ahead".

The road she was stopped on is nothing like a freeway. Wm Floyd is a heavily travelled four lanes total with a median county road that runs n-s onLong Island. If she was actually in the town of Shirley then she was on the stretch that is residential/mixed. There's a breakdown lane and the driver who hit her was probably trying to cut ninety seconds off his commute by using it as a passing lane.

That's why whey call it a breakdown lane... isn't it ?
... for people who have broken down, not on the phone about Michael Jackson ( unless she was having a breakdown over Michael )

The driver who hit her might have been passing.. but he might have broken down...
.. or out of gas, or swerved over to stop from running into a car ahead who hit the breaks, or paniced when the check engine light came on, or spilled coffee in his lap....

People that pull over to the breakdown lane for this type of activity minus well get out of their car and hold up a "SLOW" sign. People have a fascniation with looking at why they're stopped.

I get your point, but describing a woman's death by beginning with, "my favorite cell phone accident" just seemed a little harsh.
