[history]
Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge's suggestion that 8 million to 12 million illegal aliens now in the United States be "legalized" drew harsh criticism yesterday from congressional and other opponents of such legalization.
Rep. Tom Tancredo, Colorado Republican and chairman of the Congressional Immigration Reform Caucus, said Mr. Ridge should resign if he is unable or unwilling to enforce immigration laws enacted by Congress.

Ridge rapped for immigration views Does anyone truly believe that our Homeland "Security" director would say anything this controversial without the full backing of the President?

It's akin to folks getting angry at Colin Powell for his occasional nutty statements regarding Israel and the Middle East. ......It all flows from the top.

It all flows from the top. If that is the case, then the public backlash for this "trial balloon" ought to tell W. everything he needs to know...
This crap about us, as a nation, needing to decide what the immigration policies are, and then enforce them....? Is pure Bovine Excrement. The laws are already on the books; we just need a man with the B@LLS to do his JOB.
As they say, "politicians never see the light, until they feel the heat."

The "practical problem" only occurs when the illegal is from south of the border. Fear politics, and big $$$ and he sh-ts his pants on cue.

The White House reacted cautiously to Mr. Ridge's remarks. "We should match willing workers with willing employers,"
And Bush presents the crux of his immigration 'policy': getting cheap labor into the country.
And Mojo, you're exactly right. This comes straight from the top.

Domestically, Bush has been a dismal failure. If he hasn't gotten this message he's short a case of Lone Star Beer.

You don't have to be dumb to be this clueless to our problems but it sure helps. Doesn't the royalty ever venture outside the castle?

I am so tired of hearing that we are a nation of immigrants. We are a nation of LEGAL IMMIGRANTS.

Mr. Ridge definitely made the Administration appear to place employer’s wants (not needs) above law, sovereignty and the will of the majority. Tom Tancredo would do us all a service by making a run at the presidency on this issue. The public response would change this “death by a thousand cuts” immigration policy more surely than anything else that has been attempted.
I know, wishful thinking.

Well, let's put it this way. I don't support this policy.
To: kattracks
"Mr. Ridge ought to read the laws he is charged with trying to enforce," Mr. Tancredo said in a telephone interview. What Tancredo should have said was "Mr. Zeigler ought to read the laws he is charged with trying to enforce" because Ridge is a clone of that former do-nothing top man of the INS. If he doesn't want to enforce the laws he should resign.

Gerrr, we are not a nation of immigrants and never have been. We are a nation of English subjects that inhabited new territory claimed by England and then revolted against her establishing our own nation.
Our immigration problems began then and continue to this day.
To: kattracks
"We should match willing workers with willing employers," White House spokeswoman Claire Buchan said, responding to inquiries.
So now the WH becomes an employment agency for the illegals - cheap foreign labor must mean more than patriotism. Who are the companies/people demanding this cheap illegal workforce, who do they donate to, how much. I didn't realize the whole country was for sale.
To: texastoo
We are a nation of LEGAL IMMIGRANTS. And beyond that we are a nation of decendants of LEGAL IMMIGRANTS. I don't know about you, I had the good luck and God's blessing to born into a family that came to this country legally, some of them with Lafayette, and others immediately after the RW. Come here legally, fine. Welcome to the greatest nation on planet earth. Otherwise, beat it.

That's because the administration knows that Republicans will not dare vote for anyone other than Bush. Our fear of a Dim in office is taking all the pressure off the administration to do whatever they please. In our quest to destroy the Dim's we are destroying the foundations of the Republican party.

From the article:
The White House reacted cautiously to Mr. Ridge's remarks. "We should match willing workers with willing employers," White House spokeswoman Claire Buchan said, responding to inquiries. "The president believes America should be a welcoming country, a welcoming society. We're a nation of immigrants. Migration should be safe, orderly and humane." "Willing employers" = employers looking for the cheapest labor available.
"Willing workers" = illegal labor "willing" to work for below the minimum wage, in a "race to the bottom".
"Migration" = ????? Carefully note that there is no "im" before "migration". Migration implies totally open borders, and free movement across them (distinguished from "immigration", which implies defined borders and control of same).
This says it all, folks. Do you really need to know more?
Where is this country headed when a "conservative" government expresses such sentiments?
Cheers!
