With Dean in command, U.S. soldiers would be left high and dry

With Dean in command, U.S. soldiers would be left high and dry Joe Repya Published 12/13/2003

In his latest red-faced tirade, Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean has once again shown that his attacks on President Bush are based on anger, not on facts.

According to news reports of his recent rabid attack on the president, Dean claimed that the administration was going to cut combat pay and veterans benefits.

Dean's claims are complete and utter nonsense -- especially coming from a man who wanted to deny our troops the resources they need to fight the war on terror.

I am amused by the pundits who claim Dean will move to the middle. On this issue there is no way he can get there. With us or against us. Seems like Dean was against.

My first thought was, nice rant. My second thought was, why did the Minneapolis Red Star print this commentary? My third thought was, because Hillary told them to? Then I scrolled down the page and found this thread, on clintonoids who are bashing Dean for being weak on national security:

I seriously doubt DC would vote for a Republican in 2004 or even 2104. Make that:

George W. Bush - 532
Howard Dean - 6

You might wish to correct you map and legend with:
George W. Bush (REP) - 532
Howard Dean (DEM) - 6

This means the Dean gets Vermont and the District of Columbia, three EC votes each. No way any Democrat loses Washington D.C. for the next 30 years...

Also, no way Dean can win, he has no middle initial...

You're correct. Once the quotes are out there, they are out there, and they'll show up in GOP ads. No one can move that far that quickly.

Maybe Kerry will let Dean borrow his "F".

I grew up in the 60's with people who had developed an anti military mind set. If they had their way they have pulled the plug on the defense department . In their circles they would complain about how much a waste of money the military and NASA was. The starving hoards could be fed, condoms could be free, addicts could get state supplied smack, the sick healed and the ignorant could be educated(indoctrinated). The police were the pigs and the criminals were saints. Dean is like those people, always looking in the wrong direction.

Howard Brush Dean III could use a middle initial if he wanted to--Howard B. Dean. Or should it be H. Brush Dean? He's got himself some Roman numerals too, but probably wants to keep that quiet...Some of his supporters won't be able to figure out if he's Howard Dean One Hundred and Eleven, or Howard Dean Eye-Eye-Eye.

Someone named Matt Taibi has a piece attacking Wesley Clark in the Dec. 15th issue of The Nation. He repeats an exchange he had with Bill Buck, a spokesman for Clark:

Buck (on Clark & Vietnam): "What he means is that the legacy of Vietnam was that it was a war that we went into without a clear strategy for a successful conclusion."

Taibi: "Really?" I said. "Because I thought the legacy of Vietnam was that we senselessly murdered two million people in an illegal, criminal colonial invasion."

I think Taibi is closer to the mainstream of the Democratic Party than Buck or Clark are, and gives a useful insight into some of the people who are attacking Bush over Iraq.

Correct. Dean has gotten the lead he has by representing the angry lunatic wing of the Dems. To move to the center would betray all the nuts who have put him in the lead. They wanted an angry leader, and in Dean, they have one.

Many - maybe most - leftists have deep-seated (and often well-deserved) feelings of inadequacy. They sense that most military people are stronger and more self-reliant than they are. This does not fill them with feelings of admiration and gratitude.
