Southeast Michigan officials who are studying ways to comply with tough new federal air pollution rules warn that no source of smog is sacred. Not even the family barbecue.

Cars and factories still emit most of Metro Detroitís air pollution, but residents also will be asked to sacrifice to meet tough new U.S. Environmental Protection Agency ozone regulations that begin taking effect in 2007 and could cost the region tens of millions of dollars.

I'm waiting for the EPA to demand a muffler on my cat because she purrs like a motorboat.

Precisely the thing to provoke armed opposition to the EPA.

And in a state with over 600,000 men under arms every November 15.

They would have hated me this past weekend. Fire in the fireplace, smoking beef brisket on the grill, and an unnecessary trip to the store.

Stopping BBQ on the hottest days??? That's when I am more inclined to BBQ! I don't want to heat the house. I don't mind the "Ozone Action" days when they say not to mow the lawn, but BBQ is the American way.
These people are wacko. I need to move back to Ohio, quick!!!

Whenever I see one of those freeway signs warning me of an Ozone Action Day, I slip the car into neutral and pound the accelerator to the floor for a couple of seconds. Then I make plans to cut the grass that night, fill up with gas and cook dinner on the grill.

Get over it EPA and DEQ, Michigan is an INDUSTRIAL STATE! and industrial states feature...INDUSTRY. Industry means POLLUTION. Don't like it...MOVE.

I LOVE our grill! It gives me a night off from cooking, keeps the house from getting too hot in the summer, and gets my husband out from under my feet for a few minutes (all the while still feeling like a he-man!).

The best thing Engler did was stop that stupid auto emissions test required on all Michigan vehicles. Auto repair facilities had to invest time and a huge hunk of money in unnecessary equipment, communters had to sink even more cash into their cars to fix them, and the whole idiotic mess was a huge waste of time. I can't believe they're talking about reinstating it -- at $100 a pop!

Don't forget, if your car was over 10 years old, or if you were on welfare, you didn't even need to take the emission test.

And, if your car failed three times and you spent more than $60 trying to fix it, you were given a passing grade too.

All the emission was was another tax scam. Just like this new idea.

I used to joke about Al Gore seeking a ban on backyard
bar-b-q'ing. Guess it wasn't a joke after all. I'll bet old Al is rubbing his hands with glee over this!

Barbecue grills don't put out enough pollution to harm the Owner let alone the atmosphere. Where are their studies proving this should even be considered?
Bingo! There aren't any. If 10,000 people all lit their grills at once, I would bet the smoke would not signigficantly impact the air one whit except in the immediate vicinity.
1] It is doubtful that there are ever that many barbecues going at any given time and 2] They are so widely dispersed as to have a negligible cummulative effect.
Before banning burning, prove thats wrong.

I have a counter proposal.

I believe that leaves and tree branches take up an inoordinate amount of landfill space. I propose that each home be mandated to install a burn barrel. Henceforth, leaves will only be picked up during two weeks of the year. Said leaves are to be raked into the street for pickup by end loader and dump truck, thereby saving the community money by employing only two employees per rig. Handling of leaf bags is eliminated and greater effeciencies are realized within the dump truck than would be seen with non-compacted leaf bags. If acceptable, leaves could also be ground up for even greater effeciency. Tree branches from deadfall are to be burned. Excess leaves are to be burned in the burn barrel. Ashes may be disposed of in a garden or dumped on the lawn as fertilizer.

Oh wait, this has already been tried before and found barbaric by the do-gooders.

Hersey, who is advising the task force, acknowledged that barbecue bans would be impossible. But he warned that meeting the new regulations will hit residents’ wallets in one way or another.

EPA=American Nazi Party. BBQ doesn't do as much damage to air quality as the hot air coming out of their mouths. I'm waiting for the EPA to demand a muffler on my cat because she purrs like a motorboat.

I'm surprised they haven't gone after litter boxes yet.

And starve.
With the taxes in this state, the people buy steak with their stamps while we eat hot dogs.
