Freedom from fear with Butcher in chains
NY Daily News ^ | December 15 2003

And so this is how it ends for the fearsome Ace of Spades: Dragged unresisting from a rathole in the dirt, scabbed and filthy, all bluster and bravado gone, the fire fled from his belly, silently and forlornly submitting to the indignity of a videotaped oral swab - For the ways of the wicked will surely come down upon their heads ...

When his own time came to fight to his last bullet, his last drop of blood, his last heroic breath, Saddam Hussein put up his hands. He never reached for a gun. Not a shot was fired as American troops faced down the Butcher of Baghdad at long last.

Here is still another powerful image burned into the soul of all the world, American friend and American foe alike. Here was that jubilant moment when Saddam's statue was toppled in a public square. Here was the gloriously satisfying sight of his two dreadful sons reposing bloodied on their slabs. Here now is Saddam himself, a prisoner, wretched in his defeat, contemplating the harsh judgment he soon will face from the countrymen his torture squads and secret police brutalized for so many years.

Saddam's public humiliation cannot be lost on Iraq's insurgent fanatics. Few thoughtful observers suppose that they will suddenly slink away without at least one more paroxysm of shuddering violence; there will surely be more battlefields; there will surely be more American body bags. President Bush was a somber man yesterday as he reported Saddam's successful capture.

But surely, as well, the Baathists and their criminal comrades know now it is largely over for them. They have much to fear from those wildly celebrating street mobs, manifestly freed now from their own fears. Terrible swift justice will be administered to these roving malefactors in many fashions.

So be it. That is of no concern to the coalition authorities whose business at this time is to make certain they reaffirm to the Iraqi people that their sovereignty is at hand, that they are a liberated people, that Saddam is gone from their lives, that he will return to torment them never again.

Another bloodthirsty tyrant proven to be a coward! Funny how these bastards lose their stomach for battle when it's their own blood that may be spilled. The leftists in this country have that in common with Saddam!
