If you're going to check out the eDonkey network, I'd suggest using Emule as a client. It's open-source, and has better functionality, in my opinion.

Does anyone know if these clients store the search data in the registry or somewhere else it's almost impossible to get to in order to delete it?

That's one issue I've always wondered about, if someone were to subpoena your info, the searches that you have done are right there for them to see. That makes it easier to locate the files you downloaded to your computer.
