Denver not happy with latest Minneapolis export: Homeless Updated: 12-24-2003 09:46:57 AM (Minneapolis-AP) -- Denver's mayor isn't happy with Minnesota's latest export. Hennepin County buys bus tickets for homeless people who can show they have a chance for a job or shelter somewhere else -- and the Mile-High City figures about 63 Hennepin County residents have ended up there. Denver mayor John Hickenlooper called the policy "unacceptable" in a Denver Post article on Monday. Hennepin County officials say they have issued more than 33-hundred ticket vouchers over the past four years, with destinations in every state except Alaska and Hawaii. County commissioner Mike Opat says Denver shouldn't get so worked up about homeless people getting off the bus in their city. Opat says Minneapolis gets hundreds of homeless people from other states. |

We should do our share, take home a homeless person tonight. Free room and board etc etc, think how good we will feel. Yeah, right.

Back in the early-mid 90s I worked for a social service org in the Phoenix area. We began seeing guys in their 20s and 30s from NYC showing up and applying for bennies on AZ's dime.
Seems there was a cottage industry of halfway houses and transitional living quarters that had sprung up out here and somehow word of that had gotten back to the drug and alcohol rehab centers in the NYC area. They were sobering them up and giving them bus tickets out here.
Imagine their surprise when they discovered that AZ is a far, far cry from liberal NY and that we didn't feel all that obligated to help them out, nor were we required to do so.

Ha! They'll be back. They come every month via the train from Chicago to collect their welfare checks. Then they get back on the train to Chicago.
We're idiots.
Merry Christmas from Liberal Lakes!

But don't you have a famous sheriff down there who will provide them with pretty pink uniforms and work enough to keep their mind off drugs? This guy sounds like a national treasure.

Ol' Joe is pretty tough. He was the first politician of any note to come out to our pro-Bush rallys the weeks after the Rats tried to steal it. Plus he was a Bush elector.

Everything I read about Old Joe, I like. If I were Bush, the first thing I would do is fire Ridge, Mineta and Tenet. The next thing I'd do is put Sheriff Joe in charge of our borders and ask him to recommend two friends to take the jobs at DOT and CIA.

I thought the Mayor of Boulder was ashamed that they didn't have enoough homeless in his city. They fretted that they were "too rich". Hey, Denver...your solution is a short distance away. Send them to Boulder.
