Boycott French products, says cleric From correspondents in Baghdad December 26, 2003

A Shiite cleric called Friday for an Iraqi boycott of French products in protest at France's decision to ban Islamic headscarves and other religious insignia from schools.

"We condemn the French government's decision prohibiting the Islamic veil and we demand the liberty that France says it embodies," Sayyed Amer al-Husseini told some 10,000 worshippers in the Shiite-populated Baghdad Sadr City district.

"We encourage a boycott of French products and call on Muslims in France to continue wearing the veil," he said in a sermon at the main weekly Muslim prayers.

After months of heated debate, a committee of French experts last week recommended banning "conspicuous" religious insignia - including the hijab (Islamic headscarf), the Jewish kippa or skullcap, and large crucifixes - from state schools.

In a speech last Wednesday, French President Jacques Chirac came out in favour of the ban, which he wants written into law by the start of the next academic year.

Prediction: France will back off from prohibiting Muslim attire and symbols, but the ban will be enforced against Christians and Jews.

I've been trying to boycott French products for about a year. I also have to keep referring to the French owned companies so that I don't purchase their products and services.

Iraqi Shi'ites are hypocrites. They would never allow Iraqi Christians a fraction of the religious freedom Muslims enjoy in France. These people don't deserve the freedom the US soldiers gave them.
