I originally hoped Dean would be the nominee of the Dems because he would be obliterated by Bush. But an even better option is Dean isn't the nominee and runs as an independent. If Nader throws his hat into the ring, Bush might carry all 50 states (he'd probably still lose DC, though).

I think your analysis is right and I agree with you. I am beginning to think if Dean doesn't get the nod, he will run 3rd party maybe with Nader. Now wouldn't that be a pair. They would take every leftist vote there is which would be great for our side.
