I had never before heard that his wife had a miscarriage that night. How incredibly sad.

Nice that some of the sting of that game has been washed away for him.

Alabama's Tommy Lewis (second from left) looks to stop Rice ballcarrier Dicky Maegle from racing down the sideline in the 1954 Cotton Bowl.

There is an odd charm to this story, and a sense of loss, like the quiz show scandals.

He hasn't been back to the Cotton Bowl. He said he doubts he would return even if invited.

What the heck is wrong with the Cotton Bowl honchos?
Having Lewis and Meagle in the opening ceremony would bring down the house!

Americans are pretty darn forgiving...and celebrate the history of strange
events, especially given the passage of time.

At least the guy had passion! Nowadays, even in the World Series, you see an occasional guy not run out the pop up that is subsequently dropped or the guy who dogs it (Ricky Henderson) on a routine grounder to the outfield.

"Then, when the boy [Lewis] went back to the bench, he sat down and he was leaning over,
holding his head and everything. He was embarrassed, and the crowd sort of fell in
with him from disapproval to approval. They suddenly realized how competitive he was.
That was the spirit that took the stadium over. He wound up with standing applause."

That's the really sad part of the story.
That Lewis didn't realize that crowd expressed approval for someone with
such fighting spirit/emotion that he could be swept up like that.
OK, maybe it was stupid...but it was also a "beau geste" (sp?) at the same time.
