Hillary Clinton Regrets Gandhi Joke Hillary Clinton Says She Regrets Joking That Gandhi Used to Run a Gas Station in St. Louis
The Associated Press
ST. LOUIS Jan. 6 Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton apologized for joking that Mahatma Gandhi used to run a gas station in St. Louis, saying it was "a lame attempt at humor." The New York Democrat made the remark at a fund-raiser Saturday. During an event here for Senate candidate Nancy Farmer, Clinton introduced a quote from Gandhi by saying, "He ran a gas station down in St. Louis."
After laughter from many in the crowd of at least 200 subsided, the former first lady continued, "No, Mahatma Gandhi was a great leader of the 20th century." In a nod to Farmer's underdog status against Republican Sen. Kit Bond, Clinton quoted the Indian independence leader as saying: "First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win."
The director of a U.S. center devoted to Gandhi's teachings said the remarks amounted to stereotyping and were insensitive.
After being approached by The Associated Press to clarify the remarks, Clinton suggested in a statement late Monday that she never meant to fuel the stereotype often used as a comedic punch line that certain ethnic groups run America's gas stations.
"I have admired the work and life of Mahatma Gandhi and have spoken publicly about that many times," Clinton said. "I truly regret if a lame attempt at humor suggested otherwise."
Michelle Naef, administrator of the M.K. Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence, a Memphis, Tenn.-based organization founded in 1991 by a Gandhi grandson, credited Clinton and her husband, former President Clinton, with long having "supported the Gandhi message." But she said Saturday's remarks "could be incredibly harmful."
"I don't think she was, in any way, trying to demean Mahatma Gandhi," Naef said. "To be generous to her, I would say it was a poor attempt at humor. Perhaps I'm overly sensitive, but I find it offensive when people use stereotypes in that way."

In actuality it was a slip of the tongue....meaning something she was not supposed to say out in public, but something that routinely is used in conversations with Hillary and Bill, I'm sure. These people routinely talk this way about minorities.

Ah once again the left proves clearly who are actually racist bigots. Basically she is trying to get cheap laugh by denigrating all Indians stating that they are only good enough to work at a gas station, even Gandhi.
Guess this will be breaking news all over the lamestream media tonight.. NOT!

These so-called ultra-tolerant and diverse happy leftists always think they are so smart and can slither away after making such rude, thoughtless and imbecilical comments.
They are also so bathed in social classifications and labels that these comments are so much a part of their dogma, only they try very hard to never let these insensitive remarks breach their lips, sometimes the truly arrogant become in their own minds so powerful that they lose their caution.
Thank God that they do so that they are revealed in the blinding lights of truth.

The director of a U.S. center devoted to Gandhi's teachings said the remarks amounted to stereotyping and were insensitive. The Clintons are both obvious racists. The mask slips from time to time, and is there between the lines of the both of their speeches, but the helpful media, while acting like they're "clarifying", far from holding her to account, are merely helping put the mask back in place.
It is telling that the objects of their scorn---the other races they really so despise---revel in their "attention".

What next? Quotes from Martin Luther King, you know, the guy who shines shoes at the airport who had a dream
..
Hillary showed her true colors because the remarks were scripted and she actually thought they were funny. Good humor is always based around some semblance of truth and in this incident her true bias against Asian minorities is revealed. A lame attempt indeed!

However I can't. This "insensitivity" bullshit is just as much bullshit when it's applied to a liberal as to when it's applied to a conservative.
Don't like being stereotyped due to your race or sex? Tough friggin shit. You live in a tough world with rough edges and if you are too weak and spineless to deal with that, do the world a HUGE favor and go jump off of the nearest bridge you pansy.

I'm going to raise your discomfort level through the roof and then I'm going to laugh at you when you whine about it. I'm going to get the world laughing at you when you whine about it. I am of East Indian descent and I am outraged by her remarks. East Indians have a small population but are wealthy. Indians are the wealthiest ethnic group in America. This will come back to haunt her fundraising efforts.
No one has a right to not be offended but we have a right to expect that our leaders are not bigots. Would you approve of Al Sharpton being in the Senate, given the fact that he is racist against whiteS?
To: ScarTissue
If a person is so GD thin skinned that he/she can't tolerate some idiot in another race belittling their race then THEY have serious issues.
The person being Racist is ALREADY a KNOWN idiot, you don't have to do anything to him to bring that out. He/She does it by merely opening his/her stupid pie hole.
There is such a thing called Honor and Dignity that transcends what anyone may call you or your race.
If Al Sharpton was elected into the Senate then I would have no problem with Al Sharpton being in the Senate JUST because he was a Bigot.
I would have ALOT of problems with Al Sharpton being in the Senate for hundreds of reasons that have nothing to do with whether or not he's a bigot.
People in this country need to wake up and start acting like Adults. Just because someone calls you or your race a name doesn't mean Squat. That person's opinion plus 2.35 will buy you a pack of cigs in most communities.

She is a Senator and may become president. Do you honestly think that racism by a person with her power is meaningless?
To: ScarTissue
"She is a Senator and may become president. Do you honestly think that racism by a person with her power is meaningless?"
It is to me
It's when that Racism is TRULY formed into political Policy that we should be taking them out behind the barn for a good thrashing.
Until then, that person is free to think and to speak as they wish. It's what our nation was founded on. That and freedom of association and freedom of Religion.
If people can't handle that, then maybe they shouldn't be here. Freedom is about responsibility, it's about defending another person's right to say what they please regardless of whether or not you personally believe what that person says or not.
I defend Hillary's right to tell that joke. Am I a Racist because of it? No, I'm not. I'm merely defending that woman's right to say what she wants to say regardless of whether or not I personally believe what she says is true.
Do I think Hillary is a Racist?
I think personally that she's not only a racist, she's a lying thieving murdering bitch that should be thrown in jail. But that's my personal opinion of her, I have no proof of any of it.
Should she be barred from the Senate because of her views? No, she shouldn't have. But neither should OUR Senator have been treated the way he was treated.
I think Hillary should be elected out of office is what I think. This isn't a fantasy world we live in, it's the real world with real people, real dangers and real idiots.
We have to identify them, mark them and then keep them under constant watch and surveillance.
Oh.. and work to keep them from being elected in the first place, then we wouldn't have to worry about conversations like the one you and I are having :)

How do we know that it isn't a factor in her forumulation of policy? Affirmative action is very anti-Asian. Maybe she supports it because of racism.
I shouldn't be here? I was born here. This may be news to some, but not all Hispanics and Asians are immigrants...
No one has a right to be a U.S. Senator. This is not a free speech issue. This issue here is whether a nation will tolerate racism from high-ranking elected officials. We shouldn't be like the Democrats and tolerate it.
To: ScarTissue
I don't know that it's not a factor in her formulation of policy, but IF it is, it will definately begin to show itself and thus can be attacked openly for what it is. SHE can then be voted out of office.
I'm afraid you DO have the right to be a Senator if you meet all of the requirements can can garner the votes. This isn't Saddam's Iraq.
I disagree, it IS a free speech issue. You and I are both free to like or dislike people in whatever way we see fit. So long as we do not make that dislike an actionable Crime we ARE free to do so.
The problem here lies in that too many people have swallowed the liberal bullshit that you can and should regulate thought.
So now as a community we need to regulate thought. Is that your stance? The thought police on every corner?
"Where are your papers?" and all of that good stuff? It's going that way once you start down that slope. We have already started down that slope and will rue the day we ever did.
If you think that we need to regulate thought, if you don't think that ever person eligible to BE a Senator has a rigth to run for the office and sit in that office once elected, then I don't give a rats god damn where you're from. You don't belong here. This is a constitutional republic, not democratic mob rule. We do not regulate thought here, nor do we prosecute Racism. Therefore if you don't like someone's stance, tough shit. They probably do not like yours. Go gather up with like minded people and run against them, but don't go trying to change the laws of the land to suit your purposes.
Racism is an ugly side of human nature, but you cannot regulate it, you cannot squash it. it will only rise up stronger and uglier once you try.

I agree. I don't believe that she should be kicked out of office for this but I do believe she should strongly be condemned for this. I believe that if Rudy Guiliani denounces her remark that would help him in his 2006 Senate race against her. This is a golden opportunity to show minorities that the Democratic Party is truly the racist party, and to win an important swing vote that is powerful in NY. Indians are rich and socially conservative. They should be voting Republican but many vote Democratic because they have fallen for the propaganda about the Republicans being racist.
To: ScarTissue
