One can be Middle Eastern and not Arab, right ?

He writes of Arab translators and keeps repeating middle easterns as if all Middle easterns are Arabs.

Or is he saying that only Arab Middle Easterns are the problem?

Edmonds was fired by the FBI

And we only have Edmonds' version as to why. I'd say withhold judgment on this -- these charges are very hard to believe. The alternative -- that Edmonds is a disgruntled former employee who was fired for cause -- has to be considered.

re: "Remarkably, agents don't even have direct security access to the translation unit, Edmonds says. They have to be escorted into the area by translators."

Isn't that kinda like not allowing anyone in to tend the sheep, unless a wolf escorts them in?

Remember, the FBI had a Russian spy sitting in FBI HQs for 15 long years and never knew it. No one was sacked for that little "error". Why should FBI lose any sleep over this, just fire the malcontent.

And remember on who's watch these people were probably hired.

Now repeat after me, "diversity is our strength".

The FBI blamed the security lapses on a chronic shortage of Arabic translators, which has forced it to hire mostly immigrants from the Middle East, which makes background checks more difficult.

This was a crisis of their own making: they wanted to appear short-staffed so as to get a larger budget. See: Lost in Translation (an outrageous story of FBI sloth and featherbedding).
