The current administration seems to have other things to do rather than watch out for us. They have even gone so far as to discuss supporting a democrat against Tancredo in order to shut him up.

I don't believe that. Source?!

(apologies for "reacting" without reading the rest of the thread first...maybe it's been answered)

"If the growers paid $30./hr to pick oranges or tomatoes, you'd have U.S. citizens lined up around the block to pick produce. Don't tell me they don't "want the job". They just don't want the job at the wages the illegals will work for. That's where the problem lies."

Good point.

"Now, if illegal labor is good because it keeps the price of my produce down, well then let's bring them to Detroit to work on the assembly lines for $3.50/hr. That'll made my next car a heck of a lot cheaper. Why should only the produce growers benefit?"

Seems logical.

But it's not, with all due respect. The "value of work" regarding orange picking is never going to be $30 / hour, whether the pickers are "legal" or not.

The "average" union auto worker makes more than the "average" college-educated regular person, presuming their salaries and benefits as negotiated don't cause the "fat cats" to "lay them off". But that's a different argument about the "value of work".

No offense intended to any hard-working folks. I'm not complaining, and "class war-fare" is a tenet of the Democrat party.

Not if we maintain the price of oranges. But who says we have to maintain the price of oranges?

Once we get the illegals on the assembly lines at $3.50 an hour, your new car will only cost $10,000. Use the money you save to buy oranges at $100 per pound.

I believe it was Karl Rove who floated the idea of helping defeat Tancredo.

All due respect, but you really can't just say that without a "corroborating source"!

(or at least, you can, but it takes away from your point...I have heard so much "emoting" and "speculating" about this whole thing, and far too little "analysis" based on "facts"...I've yet to hear any logical reason why Karl Rove's name has come into this at all! Maybe I should've been from Missouri, LOL!)

re: el padron

Not many other than church personnel are aware of these little jefes. Try inviting newcomers to church, and observe your response. I know of one church which had a thriving Hispanic ministry, complete with headset translations during services, only to see the Spanish-speakers disappear on what was later found to be orders from el senor who supplied them with jobs and housing and transport into town.

In another town I have heard rumors of violence against misbehaving wetbacks. The law enforcement may not interfere because los padrones do manage to keep order. For now--who knows who'll replace them at a later time when they have so much less to fear thanks to the Bush Amnesty?

The President isn't proposal to restrict legal immigration and clamp down on giveaways to illegal aliens. That what makes the proposal he came up with so idiotic. If Jorge W. Bush wants to reward his good buddy Vicente Fox, I'm all for it, but not with the hard earned money of the American people. The freebies and giveaways to illegal aliens are costing us billions at a time when our federal and state governments have to cut services and benefits for deserving American citizens and permanent residents. I can't think of anything that offends Americans more than the perception our elites could care less about OUR needs. How about putting us first for a change?

FWIW, I heard Tancredo himself say it on the Michael Savage show.

we all have heard how hard working and trouble-free the illegal alien workers supposedly are. When they are legalized and don't have their fear of deportation, and when they have greater access to government benefits, they are going to cause even greater problems to society than they currently do.

...they were going to support another Republican to run against him in his district...

P'f, I can believe that!

B-N, it's becoming more clear why this "rumor" of Rove "targetting" Tancredo is at least plausible...the articles you cite are a little out of date ('02) but unless Tancredo has toned down the rhetoric a bit by now, I can see why Rove would "go after him"!! I do not, however, believe that Rove actually has...I think that's Tancredo bolstering his case...

Roll Call says "Tancredo is not one of the president's favorite people. Earlier this year, the Congressman accused Bush of pandering to Hispanic voters and trying to prop up Mexican President Vicente Fox by offering amnesty to certain undocumented immigrants...

This is an insult to the President, and is based on the false premise that "amnesty" was being offered...

the congressman told "The Washington Times" that the president was an "open borders" advocate because of his amnesty plan for illegal aliens...

Likewise...inaccurate and inflammatory!

Now I have to say I agree with Tancredo's positions, but "shooting from the lip" with fast accusations and loose facts is not the way to promote your principles (or win many friends, LOL!)!

So, Bush obviously isn't considering the immigration problem as a way to get more votes, like other past presidents.

Organized crime rings are the Mexican drug cartels and human smugglers, also organized criminal rings obtain and sell stolen identification documents. Bush isn't addressing organized crime --- he's encouraging more of it.

Organized crime gets involved when an activity is 'illegal'.

Since Bush would be making them not 'illegal', OC wouldn't see a way to profit and therefore wouldn't be involved.

If OC rings sell stolen ID, then again, the need for those ID's is being removed and would no longer be profitable.

So where in all this do you see Bush encouraging OC if he is removing their incentive?
