You know, honestly, I don't really have a serious problem with the illegals who actually get a job, and send money home to their families, to support them. IF they are good workers, and honest, give a good days work for their wages, I'd suggest fining them, and legalizing their status as temporary (or "Guest") workers. Three years, and send 'em home. Hmmm. Maybe a five-year wait before they can come back again, as a guest worker? And STIFF fines? Say 50% of their wages? Or, if they go home before we catch them,(saving us administrative costs) and apply for legal guest worker status, and they have a job waiting (probably with their previous employer) treat them as legals.

For the ones who came legally, three years, and if they want to stay (as a guest worker) and have good recommendations from their work, an immediate renewal of their status for another three years. Taxpaying all the time.

I, too, grew up in a mostly-hispanic part of the US, Santa Fe Springs, California. My brother and I were the only Anglo kids on the block. Most of our neighbors (not all, but most) were decent, honest, and hardworking, like BushCountry's.

As far as the illegality of illegal immigration, I get passed every day on the roads here in Oklahoma by people who are speeding. Show me serious respect for the law in everyday life, by most Americans, and I'll buy harsher punishments for people who are trying to take care of their families.

On the other hand, I know also that there ARE a lot of people who take advantage of welfare programs in our country. If one of our "guests" has availed him or herself of those programs (I might make an exception for medical care, but I've gotta think on that a while) I'd say "chuck 'em out." Of course, I'd like to do that to the folks who can work, and won't, too.

As if anyone here objects to people "trying to take care of their families." Nice slimy tactic.

Your right to take care of your family does include the right to break and enter my home, bury my street in garbage, or squat on my property.
