A leg for a leg, orders sharia court
January 07 2003 at 05:47AM

Lagos - A Muslim court in northern Nigeria has ordered that a 45-year-old man's leg be amputated as punishment for doing the same to his wife.
The Upper Sharia in the town of Bauchi made the order against Adamu Hussaini Maidoya, who cut off the right leg of his wife, Amina. He accused her of infidelity, after "over exposing" herself to a doctor to get an injection.
Judge Alhaji Abdu Yerima ordered that the convict's right leg be amputated at the knee and that the person or doctor who executes the sentence should not administer anaesthetic or painkillers.
The judge quoted relevant sections of the Holy Quran and the Hadith to support his judgment and gave the convict 30 days to file an appeal.
"He must experience similar pain his wife went through when he cut off her right leg from the knee,'' the judge ruled.
Shortly before sentencing, Amina Hussaini, who just been discharged from the Bauchi specialist hospital, told the court how on August 21 2002 her husband accused her of infidelity, overpowered her and cut her right leg off at the knee with a sharp machete.
Amina, who had been married to the accused for about 20 years and has eight children, including four-month-old twins, prayed for justice.
Maidoya, who wept profusely during the trial, pleaded guilty but pleaded for forgiveness, saying his act was destined by God. Maidoya, a trader, also told newsmen he was neither insane nor under the influence of alcohol when he cut off his wife's leg. - Independent Foreign Service

I sure would hate to see what this court would have done with Ted Bundy or Jeffrey Dahmer.

A biography of Bryn Mawr College President Carey Thomas describes her having visited various doctors over a period of years, seeking treatment for worsening leg pain stemming from the scarring from a severe childhood burn and subsequent infection. Finally, one of the doctors tells her that he will need to actually LOOK at the leg if he is to help her. He was the first one to lay eyes on it -- all the others had been doing their diagnosis and treatment through her floor length skirts!
Big difference, however, is that while social pressure was strong for women to keep covered from neck to toe, there were no socially sanctioned violent penalties for "immodesty".

Of course, Islamic law will say that the husband is merely being sanctioned for savagely mishandling his property, not for causing harm to another human being - females being nothing more than chattel, of course...

You and your cultural suicide. You need some of my anxiety pills!Cathryn, if a guy can see a woman's ankles, then he will be caused to imagine what her calves look like, and if he can imagine what her calves look like, then he will be caused to imagine what her knees look like, and if he can imagine what her knees look like, then he will be caused to imagine . . . !!!
You get the idea - it's whirlpool of decadence!!

If our ancestors were half as prudish as they're made out to be none of us would be here. The typical 19th century American towns had whole districts made up of nothing but bordellos, and that was during the so called "victorian" era. Certainly, there were very few if any instances of girls or women being dismembered by their relatives for the crime of being treated by a doctor. Islam is in a class all by itself.

FYI, it wasnt that long ago when women in america could not expose even their ankles, when you couldnt even mention the word: "leg", and when men were arrested for going topless in public. Hmmm, come to think of it, seeing what has happened in the last 30+ years of committing cultural suicide here in the U.S., maybe those days were not so bad after all.
Maybe a little extreme, call me a "nut" (I've been called worse many times, especially by my own father B-)) but I don't think the 1950's were all that bad either.
You can point your fingers at others and criticize people of other countries only if you ignore our own past, and only if you realize that some people of other countries dont think americans are too civilized either in their murdering/aborting a million babies each year.
I know there have been wrongs in the past, but every country has them. About this guy getting his leg cut off, one side of me thinks he deserves it, but the other side thinks it's cruel. I lean towards the latter, I do believe that our justice system should temper justice with mercy plus Sharia Law well, in many instances, it is rather barbaric. As to the abortion thing, I agree with you there, but that's for another time.

I am glad you brought up that story, I have heard similar things/stories in america, it was not uncommon in America even for a doctor to not be able to look at a womans leg.
Anyways, I dont see where there is a difference from this story. The Nigerian court system is saying that it was wrong(not right) for this guy to amputate his wifes leg. It was NOT ok. The Nigerian court is saying that it is NOT socially sanctioned in Nigeria for husbands to cut off their wives legs.
My only problems with cutting off the husbands leg as a punishment, is: 1.) it does not bring back the womans leg, and 2.) why not cut off BOTH of the guys leggs as punishment?
To: rrrod
well well..do i detect a whining liberal in our mist??? Judge for yourself, if it was up to me, I would cut off at least BOTH of his legs.
You gotta problem with that? or are you the liberal?
To: waterstraat
I think it depends which local Nigerian court one happens to end up in -- some of them HAVE sanctioned this sort of thing. And there is considerable social support for extremely violent measures to keep women hidden and slavish. Neither of these were characteristics of U.S. society at any time (though the brief and localized Salem witch hysteria was comparably insane and violent, towards a different objective).

Sorry CAIR, your religion is the mental disease of intolerance, and you refuse to clean your own house... so don't lecture me about calling a spade a spade.
